Term 3 in Te Whare Kereru Dear Parents and/or Caregivers of Te Whare Kereru students, Term 1 and 2 have passed so quickly and it is hard to believe that we are half way through 2014. We hope you have had a restful and relaxing holiday and the calving season is going well. LEARNING PROGRAMMES: Learning Programmes this Term will focus on Literacy, Numeracy, Physical Education and Integrated Learning – Science, Social Studies, Technology and The Arts: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. At the heart of learning will be: The Tatuanui School Values, ‘We caRe’. The Commonwealth Games will be a major focus. The students will be given many opportunities to access information using technologies so they will be skilled users of ICT. They will be encouraged to become independent thinkers who can think constructively, critically and creatively. ASSEMBLY and CLASS NEWSLETTER: Week 6. LIBRARY DAY: Library day for the children will be on Friday. It is a school policy that –all school books need to be taken to and from school in a book bag so please help your children to remember this. KAPAHAKA: Many children from Te Whare kereru are performing in the Kapahaka Festival. The final date for this is still being decided. HOMEWORK: As part of your child’s Homework Programme it is important that they read widely and often. I would like your support with this. Please encourage your children to read for at least 15 minutes each night. I have a Book Log for them to record their reading in. In this Reading Log there is a place to write a word from the book that they have read that is interesting- in Writing we call them WOW words. Talking about these words and discussing their meanings will help your child build their reading vocabulary. It would be great to see your child using these words in their Writing. My Independent Reading Log: Term 3 Weeks: 1 and 2 I am learning to read independently and complete this Independent Reading Log. I am learning to predict what will happen in the text. Tatuanui School has registered as a ‘Gingerbread Baker School.’ We are going to bake and decorate some yummy Gingerbread Horse biscuits. We will sell our biscuits during NZRDA Awareness Week (Week 2) then donate our proceeds to Riding for the Disabled. Our biscuits will cost $2 each. LITTERLESS LUNCHBOXES: As part of the commitment to being an Enviro-school we are aiming for Zero Waste and one way of trying to do this is by reducing the rubbish that we have in our lunch boxes. The children are being encouraged to use reusable containers, snap-lock bags or lunch paper instead of gladwrap. We also are thinking of alternatives to muesli bar wrappers and chips packets. TE WHARE KERERU CAMP TO ROTORUA: Year 3 students - 2 days and 1 night Year 4 students – 3 days and 2 nights We are at present organising this camp which will be held in Term 4. We will be applying for grants and hope that the PTA will continue to support us to reduce costs. Further information will be available later on in the term. You are very welcome to make arrangements with the office to begin down payments to help spread the cost of camp. GYM SPORT FESTIVAL: A meeting was held last term for those children who were interested in participating in this competition on the 4th of September. More information about this event will be sent home in the next few weeks. We thank you for the opportunity to work with your child. We are sure we will have another great term! Thank you for your support, Regards, Chris Follett and Robyn Hampton
