PROGRAM COMPONENTS
The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) provides participants with opportunities to develop
and enhance leadership skills and competencies through participation in various activities.
Learning occurs in different ways and through different avenues, therefore it is important to
complete all of the following components:
RETREATS are all day interactive activities focused on understanding yourself, how to work
in teams, and how to positively impact your community.
COHORT WORKSHOPS are half-day of interactive activities and experiential learning.
These workshops build on the learning from the semester retreat.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: At least 25-30 hours of community service hours per
semester at an agency of your choice.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES (EA) are events, activities, or organizations that enhance
leadership development outside of the classroom and ELP retreats and cohort workshops.
Examples of EAs are: lectures (ELP or presented by other departments/colleges);
workshops/retreats/conferences; student clubs/Greek letter organizations; student
government; Guidance 150 course; and participation in campus/community boards or honor
societies. Other activities might count for EA credit with coordinator approval.
MENTORSHIP opportunities are a main component of the program. Students will be paired
up with a Student Affairs administrator and meet at least three times per semester. Students
learn from mentors what it means to be an experienced member of UAA’s leadership
community.
REFLECTIONS are written opportunities for students to meditate on their experiences at
the workshops, retreats, enrichment activities, and community service projects.
LEADING-SHIPS are a great opportunity for students to apply their leadership skills to
hands-on job experiences. ELP partners with Career Student Services to offer participants a
10-week placement with a department in Student Affairs.
UAA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE is an annual conference available to all students in the
University of Alaska system. Workshops presented by student leaders and faculty/staff.
