Dear Student,
Welcome to the Creative Writing programme at Bath Spa University.
The teaching team – award-winning poets, fiction and nonfiction writers, scriptwriters,
professional writers – and I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you on
Monday, the 28th of September.
At the end of this you will find a grid that shows where you are expected during your first
week at Bath Spa University, also known as Welcome Week.
As you can see, our first meeting will take place at 10.00 on Monday the 28th. We will meet
in room CM.G23 of the new Commons Building (the CM prefix tells you the building is
Commons).
The team – including myself – are not so old that we can’t remember moving to a new city,
meeting new people and starting a new course can lead to plenty of anxiety, even fear, and
encourage you to relax – though I know this will be difficult given the amazing journey
you’re about to begin.
Our primary task in the first part of the academic year is to help you settle into the course,
and in our first meeting all you have to do is meet the teaching team and have breakfast!
We have only one set text in Creative Writing – New Hart’s Rules: The Handbook of Style for
Writers and Editors. If you would like to pick up a copy of this and read it over the summer,
this will help prepare you for the course. New and used copies of New Hart’s Rules are
readily available from most bookstores, including Amazon.
Some other books that may be of interest (and these are set texts on some modules)
include:
· Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee
· Speak Memory by Vladimir Nabokov
·
52 Ways of Looking at a Poem: or How Modern Poetry Can Change Your Life: A Poem for
Every Week of the Year, ed. Ruth Padel
And please keep reading your favourite authors. It’s been proven again and again: good
readers make good writers.
I hope you have a lovely, restful remainder of your summer and we will see you on Monday
28th September.
Dr Paul Meyer, Subject Leader. Creative Writing

Bath Spa University One Page Student IT Guide - 2015-16
Logging in to the University network – Your BSU Account Logon will be used for all
internal systems such as the Hub, Library and Minerva. Your BSU Account Logon id
is your 6 digit Student ID.
Your initial password will be as sent to your personal email from Bath Spa
University in the format XXXX.Zzz.
If you get your password wrong three times, your account will ‘lock’ and you will
have to wait an hour for it to automatically unlock. Locked accounts can’t access
the University network. Please change your password by using Ctrl+Alt+Delete or
via the Password Management Tool, once successfully logged in to a Windows or
Thin Client PC. If you forget your password, speak to the SOACS or IT Helpdesk (or
see Password Management Service below).
Password Management Service - BSU students are encouraged to register with
the University’s password management service. Once you have successfully
answered the security questions you will be able to reset your own password
without contacting the IT Helpdesk. If you haven’t already done so, please follow
the instructions under ‘How to register’:
https://wiki.bathspa.ac.uk/display/computing/Student+Password+Reset
Student Open Access Computer Support (SOACS) – A team of students are
employed during term time to help with student IT queries and problems. They are
based in LY.119 (the short stay open access room on the first floor of Newton Park
Library) and also Library Helpers in Commons CM.G02. They can also be contacted
by internal phone on ext. 5575. Availability hours are 9:00am until 7:00pm from
Monday to Friday.
IT Helpdesk – The University’s main IT Helpdesk can be contacted by email using
ithelpdesk@bathspa.ac.uk by telephone on 01225 876500 or internal extension
6500. Staff are available from Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 5:00pm.
http://www.bathspa.ac.uk/services/computing
Email - Your BSU Email Address is from Google Mail which will be used for all
official correspondence from the University. You should ensure that you check this
regularly for all important announcements about your course and programme of
study. The first time you log in you will be asked to change your password, so
avoid using a mobile device – use a laptop/desktop computer. From the Google
search page (http://www.google.co.uk/) click on ‘Sign In’ in the top right corner of
the screen, or use ‘Add Account’ option if you already have a Gmail account
already signed in.
Email address: john.smithYY@bathspa.ac.uk - where YY indicates the year of
joining the University. Your initial password will be as sent to your personal email
from Bath Spa University in the format XXXX.Zzz
Be careful to save emailed attached files to your S:\ drive or a USB device before
you attempt to make changes to them.
9
Wireless Network - Students have access to ‘eduroam’ across the majority of
University campuses and buildings. To get access, it is important that you accept a
security certificate if prompted –
https://wiki.bathspa.ac.uk/display/computing/eduroam
User name - Your user name is your student number in the following format e.g.
012345@bathspa.ac.uk and password is the same as your BSU Account logon
password.
Printing – First year undergraduates are given an initial £2.50 credit in their
printing accounts. Add credit to your account using the money loading machine in
LY.119 or online under ‘My Print Credits’ on The Hub once logged in
https://thehub.bathspa.ac.uk/students/myaccount
Minerva – The name for the University’s virtual learning environment running on
Blackboard software. Login with your BSU Account username and password from
this web page http://minerva.bathspa.ac.uk/
Thin Client Open Access Terminals – Open access computer rooms now provide
computer access using thin client terminals (as an alternative to PC and Mac
desktop computers). The thin client terminals work in a very similar way to PCs but
one difference is that if you use a USB device it will appear as the U:\ drive.
Saving Work – Your University work should be saved to the S:\ drive as often as
practicable. This is a network drive that is available to you across the University’s
range of computer and thin client terminals. Files are stored securely on the S:\
drive and are backed up every 24 hours.
Where to go for IT help
If you experience any problems there are a number of ways in which you can get IT support
during Welcome Week and once formal teaching begins
The Student Open Access Computer Support (SOACS) team will be available from 9:00am
to 7:00pm from Mondays to Fridays during term time. The team is based in the Library, in
LY.119, and can provide help with passwords, account issues, email, Minerva, Turnitin,
printing and the wireless networks.
The Commons Helpers will be available from 9:00am to 7:00pm weekdays and from
9:00am to 5:00pm at weekends, on the ground floor of the Commons Building. They can
help you with Library electronic services queries as well as IT questions.
There will be sessions on the use of the Library, as well as Student Support, Careers
Service/Employability plus study skills and time management during the second week of
term.
