5. Presentation: (6:00-6:15) Justin Croft, Zeppelin Development
Justin Croft last presented in February as a RiNO representative about bike/ped bridge at 35 th /36th St. and Wazee over the railroad
Tonight, he represented Zeppelin Development and provided info on a public/private/non-profit partnership to build a bike/ped bridge at 35th St. over the South Platte River o The RiNO Plan developed 13 years ago identified a bridge in this location connecting the Taxi development on the west to RiNO on the east; would connect to existing bike path
Zeppelin Development is working with Bridges to Prosperity
(bridgestoprosperity.org), which has built 140 bridges in developing countries to connect people to markets, schools
Evaluating alternative designs and financing strategies since there
’s not $5 mil available for bridge as originally proposed o Met with PW, OED, CPD and presented bridge idea for $1.2 mil o OED said they’d contribute $350,000 o North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative may also contribute money for planning and design o Zeppelin would cover balance o Could be a pilot study showing how to build bike/ped bridge for a quarter of the typical cost – think the structure could get national attention due to cost savings
The cable-stayed structure with a slight camber would be very durable, seismic proof and have high wind loads o More rigid than typical cable bridge; but as a flexible structure, you will feel it move; it meets ASHTO, but public may perceive it as less safe due to motion o Considering alts for deck surfacing – timber, concrete or steel depending on PW requirements o Deck width
– tried to do 6’, but now propose 8’ to better accommodate cyclists, although Molly North said 10’ would be ideal o 50-year life span o Fence would provide side protection
Page 3 of 5 o Approach ramp would accommodate ADA
MBAC questions and comments o Floodplain issues? – working with PW to ensure it’s not a flood hazard o Would this type of bridge go over railroad?
– would need additional study o Would be great if this type of bridge could apply to 31st bike/ped bridge
Next step is memo of understanding and technical report
Zeppelin would like MBAC’s letter of support – Parry will draft
