Ultherapy is a recent non-surgical medical procedure which uses “focused
ultrasound” for cosmetic enhancement. Specifically, jawlines can be better defined, brows
can be lifted as well as necks tightened. The lines around the chin and mouth can be
softened.
Ultherapy benefits are not comparable to the dramatic improvements seen from a
traditional surgical face lift. However, for those who do not want surgery and the down
time associated with the surgery, Ultherapy is a good alternative treatment with a more
subtle gradual tightening.
Ultherapy works by using traditional ultrasound technology but in the focused,
pinpoint, mode instead of the standard defocused mode. In the focused mode, multiple
pinpoint zones produce micro injuries that gradually stimulate new collagen production.
These zones are called “thermal coagulation points” or “TCP’s”. As the new collagen is
produced there is a gradual tightening of the skin over the next sixty to ninety days. The
results should last anywhere from twelve to twenty four months: sometimes shorter and
sometimes longer. One must not forget that the aging process continues despite any
procedure, being surgical or non-surgical.
The cost of the procedure is anywhere from one thousand to thirty five hundred
dollars depending on the areas of the face treated as well as the size of the face and
treatment zones. The Ultherapy procedure takes approximately one to two hours, again
depending on the areas treated. The amount of discomfort varies from patient to patient.
Some patients may need to be pre-treated with Advil or a similar type medicine prior to the
Ultherapy procedure.
After the procedure, some patients will develop bruising which can last for seven to
ten days. We recommend stopping any kind of aspirin, fish oil, herbs or NSAIDs medicines
one week prior to Ultherapy treatment. Other side effects may include mild swelling and
occasional numbness in small areas due to the nerve irritation. If numbness occurs, it will
gradually resolve over the next four to six weeks on average.
As with any anti-aging procedure we recommend gentle skin care and continued
sun protection both before and after the procedure.
Please ask any of our registered nurses or physicians if you have any specific
questions about Ultherapy.
