Each theme will be headed by assigned faculty and or postdoc. For the first week of each block, a single postdoc/faculty will present a 30 min presentation of the theme following by discussion. The second week of each block will consist of a 35-45 min powerpoint presentation of a paper by the assigned postdoc. The 3rd and 4th week of each block will consist of students presenting a 30 min presentation on a paper selected by the assigned postdoc. The student presenter will be a single person assigned for that week who is responsible for: 1. Preparing a 5-10 min introduction for the paper in powerpoint. Background research should be obtained from sources beyond the introduction of the assigned paper and set the historical contect of the paper, i.e. what was known prior to the assigned paper, as well as other relevant information. 2. Prepare enlarged, readable powerpoint slides of figures and tables in the paper, including supplement figures and tables. 3. Distribute and provide copies of the powerpoint slides to others in the class as notes. 4. When presenting the paper, be prepared to discuss the methods used, limitations of the methods used, controls used, alternative experimental approaches and if the data support the conclusions. 5. Facilitating a closing synopsis of the paper, being certain that we tie the new results to the bigger picture and are clear how the paper moved the field forward. 6. Readers (2 assigned per week) are responsible for reading the paper and facilitating discussion of the paper by asking questions. 7. Seeking advice and direction from assigned postdoc. Papers: Papers assigned by postdocs should be recent (published within the last 12 months) and relevant to our topic. If the paper has a supplemental material section, the pdfs for both the paper and the supplement material must be provided to the assigned postdoc by the Monday before you are discussion leader. Do not select a paper that you have presented or discussed in another class. Grading: Class attendance: Attendance is required. A roll sheet must be signed each week. 2 unexcused absences will result in a grade U. Please contact Dr. Dore with university-excused absences (illness, attending conference, etc) or a scheduling conflict as soon as possible. Presenters: Missing your presentation for an unexcused absence will result in a grade of U. Readers: Are required to read their assigned paper and ask questions to promote discussion. Attending class without reading the assigned paper will count as one unexcused absence. All: All students are required to read assigned articles prior to each class and to be prepared to discuss as well as generate and answer questions pertaining to the articles and related topics.
