Last year, residents of MCSW recycled over 1,000 tons of material with a total value of about $75,000. If it was thrown out, as so much still is, it would have cost us about $96,000 in tipping and hauling fees. Develop a plan according to our bin arrangement. We have hired extra help this year because of the difficulty some folks have telling corrugated cardboard from steel cans and number plastic from number . The cardboard and the steel can issue leave little to explain; please care. The plastic numbers are a little more of a challenge. Number 2 plastic, , is of two varieties; “colored” and “natural”. Natural number 2 has the highest value because, without dye in it, it can be used for a much greater variety of products the second time around. The colored number 2 is as easily used, but only to make products and containers that are black. The difference per ton of plastic is several hundred dollars! Discerning the plastic number (which indicates the chemical resin) can be more of a challenge. HDPE Milk and Water jugs. No color added to plastic. It looks grey. Colored HDPE Plastic only. Look on Look for the (triangle) with a number (1 to 7) in it. Please put articles with on the bottom in the appropriate number 2 bin. All others should go as mixed plastic EXCEPT NO STYRO FOAM! There is no market for foam products. Simple as that! the bottom for Mixed Plastics (NO Styrofoam!) Colored Jars Clear Jars ` Returnable Bottles for Lions There is also confusion over steel and aluminum cans v. scrap metal. They are not the same in any way. The reason we continue to get paid a premium for cans is because they are a known composition (alloy). Non food containers and scrap are not consistent alloys and truly mess up the process! The more we have to pick through improperly deposited recyclables, the more it costs you in the long run. Please take the few minutes to prepare and recycle properly. Thank you!
