Director of Sport
The Maynard School is the leading girl’s school in the South West. It is the third
oldest girl’s school in the country and is fully committed to a selective, single sex
education for young women so that they leave inspired, committed and have clear
aspirations for their futures. Our mission is bold and far reaching: we believe that
all girls should be independent learners, be imaginative, be socially responsible,
as well as being effective and creative problem solvers.
Our students are able: most go onto Oxbridge or Russell group universities. We
are proud of our academic reputation. The curriculum is innovative and is enriched
by cross curricular days, imaginative use of technology, we run an extensive cross
curricular programme and run a full and diverse range of trips both in the UK and
worldwide. We are a British Council International School developing key
partnerships with schools in South Africa and Germany. We recognise the place of
internationalism and the role of each of our students in fulfilling their obligations
as global citizens.
In the last five years we have developed our curriculum at KS5 and KS3 and
invested in the IT infrastructure and mobile learning, enhanced our music and
performing arts provision, invested in the long lease of our school sports field
which we have ambitious plans for, and development of the Junior School and Link
Block.
The Director of Sport is a new post which will allow the successful candidate to
develop a clear and coherent vision for Sport going forward.
Physical Education and Sport play an important role in the life of the school, we
recognise the importance of healthy lifestyles and the role of competition. Our aim
is to increase participation in sport, and develop a clear mind-set of success.

We have access to the University of Exeter’s 25m swimming pool as well as a
public pool 500 yards from the school.
Access to Hockey astro turf pitches is through the University of Exeter Sports
Centre, a short bus ride away.
The Physical Education and sports curriculum is varied offering students traditional
games of hockey, netball, basketball, tennis and athletics. Additional Activities
include using coaches to run the options programme for senior students, activities
range from Mountain biking, climbing on Dartmoor, Pilates, fitness, fencing,
archery, golf etc. In addition, the department runs a sports leaders programme
for Junior and Senior girls.
We are fully committed to providing a progressive and challenging outdoor
education programme beginning in Year 8 with participation in the Exmoor
Challenge, the annual Ten Tors Challenge and The Duke of Edinburgh Award. Over
45 girls have obtained their DoE Gold Award in the last 7 years. We also take
senior students on an expedition every two years which includes community based
work on the ground and a challenging trek. Recent trips have visited Morocco, The
Indian Himalayas, Peru, and Iceland.
All members of the teaching staff are expected to fully commit to the life of the
school and for the PE Department to participate fully in extracurricular activities/
fixtures during the week and including Saturdays.

Job Description for
Director of Sport (DoSp)
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
Summary of Role
The Director of Sport will be an inspirational, experienced and dynamic leader with
a strong sporting and managerial pedigree.
The DoSp will be responsible for all sporting activities across the school including
Junior PE. The DoSp will provide leadership, effective management of the
department and aim to deliver excellence in all sports. In consultation with the
Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the DoSp will develop and implement the strategic
and operational plans for the department with a view to placing The Maynard firmly
in the top tier of sporting schools.
The DoSp and colleagues will be expected to teach across the whole age range from
Junior PE up to and including A level PE
The DoSp will also line-manage department members including reviewing the
performances of coaches.
The DoSp will have overall responsibility for coordinating income-generation
activities, including sporting clubs/camps during holiday periods.

Inspire and deliver an ethos of excellence in terms of
breadth and depth in elite, team and individual sports.
Inspire pupils and increase the number of girls achieving
representational honours. Drive forward the PE and Sports
Development Plan (part of the Whole School Development
Plan) and contribute to the whole school development
strategy and plan.
Take responsibility for scheduling sports teaching
(including pre-season training) and coaching staff in
collaboration with staff leading individual sports.
Work with the Heads of Year and Tutors to support specific
talented individuals.
Ensure girls in receipt of Sports Scholarships have a
suitable programme and opportunities. They must be
routinely monitored and encouraged to reach their full
potential.

Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the sports
curriculum at all levels and develop literature that supports
and showcases the strategic and developmental aims of
the sports department.
Oversee the development of elite sport programmes (e.g.

Identify, develop and oversee opportunities for non-team
pupils.
Manage the professional development of all sports staff to
ensure their skills and knowledge are up-to-date, and keep

Department.
Develop role and profile of sports scholars
Take responsibility for staff welfare and the provision of
absence cover.
Liaise with the Director of Studies regarding timetabling.

Liaise with Admissions and develop close links with feeder
schools to encourage talented sportswomen into the
School.
Oversee the programme of all sports fixtures from Junior
thru the Senior school.
Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young
persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you
come into contact.
Ensure that the School is compliant in matters of sports
teaching and coaching. Review policies and risk
assessments on an annual basis.
Provide reports to the Health and Safety committee and
attend the termly meetings.
Take responsibility for ensuring provision of immediate first
aid during training or matches in conjunction with other
staff in the department.

Propose and manage the sports budget annually; produce
a clear rational for annual spending and liaise with the
marketing department and school uniform suppliers with
regards to replacement of kit

fashion and ensure match reports are written by those
