the United States, a 1995 summer heat wave killed more than 700 people. On
average, twice as many people in the United States die from heat as from
cold in any given year. People with heart problems and respiratory problems
are particularly susceptible to the heat. Besides deaths directly caused by the
heat, global warming enables tropical diseases, such as malaria, to extend
their ranges. Diseases caused by insects, such as mosquitoes, will increase
with warmer temperatures.

Paragraph 2
More efficient use of energy and use of alternative energy sources can
help slow down or stop global warming. Motor vehicles are a major
challenge. The Sierra Club says the average car emits 50 tons of carbon
dioxide pollution into the air during its lifetime. Raising fuel economy
standards will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Coal-burning power
plants also produce large amounts of carbon dioxide. Oil and gasburning
plants produce carbon dioxide, too, but in smaller quantities. Shifting
energy production to rely more on solar energy and wind energy will
reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere.
