Three DOH super priorities of obesity, diabetes, and substance misuse
Also working to reduce the teen birth rate, a driver of generational poverty, looking to
change the landscape and reduce by 50% in four year, currently there is 2,600 per year
Looking at the root causes, lower health status than other states, want to do differently
Want a fresh perspective, looking to work collectively out of silos and build coalitions
Public health is the largest division of the Department of Health
This is one of the most exciting moments in history of public health with chronic disease
breakthroughs and the changes that need to be made, look upstream for prevention, need a
payment system
Previously the Department of Health had 7-8 areas of focus, now 3, aligning in an annual
plan
New Mexico is ranked as the 33-45th healthiest state
DOH is working to improve the contract process, getting more effective ways of working
Looking at innovation, such as fitness monitoring in a scalable way, a rural health individual
is team with someone in the country and fitness goes up 10%
Need to use resources in the best possible way, do more with less
Looking at alternative funding sources, such a funds from the philanthropic foundations for
the reduction of teen birth rates, use private capital to leverage resources
Only $.02 of every dollar is spent on preventative health care, need more marketing and
branding
