Pastor Wayne
*SIGN OF PEACE AND GREETING
*MISSION STATEMENT: (Unison)
The Viola United Methodist Church is a Bible based family of believers who
love God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; glorifying God by prayerful, caring
outreach and open doors.
*OPENING HYMN NO. 240: “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”
*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively)
Jeff Wendorf
L: Restore us, O Lord of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
P: Come, Lord Jesus!
(You may be seated.)
LIGHTING OF THE 4th ADVENT CANDLE
Daniel and Anali Knotke
Family: The fourth candle symbolizes God’s love for the world. We praise and
thank God for the revelation of his love for us through the gift of his Son, Jesus
Christ.
Lighting of the third candle. Family reads Luke 2:8-14, Psalm 91:11-16.
Family: The angels, God’s messengers, not only announced the birth of Jesus but
are symbols that remind us of God’s love and protection.
Unison Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to show your love, that it may be a
source of hope to those who feel unlovable and a beacon of light to the
darkest corners of your world. Help us always to be carriers of your love to
all. Amen.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Responsively)
Jeff Wendorf
L: Our God, we confess to you our shortcomings, our moments of weakness and
wickedness.
P: Forgive us, O Lord.
L: We confess our insensitivity to the needs around us, our ignorance of the
interruptions and opportunities to serve.
P: Forgive us, O Lord.
L: We confess our forgetfulness of your mercy and sacrifice.
P: Forgive us, O Lord.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Responsively)
Jeff Wendorf
L: Let us pray for the nations of the world and those who lead them, that wars may
cease, and peace and justice may be known in every place.
P: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
L: Let us pray for all of those who live in sorrow or any kind of need, that they may
be healed and strengthened.
P: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
L: Let us pray for families, that, like Joseph and Mary, they may care for their
children and protect them.
P: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
L: Let us pray for the church, that we may welcome Christ when he appears in our
midst, especially among the hungry, the sick, and the homeless.
P: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
L: We offer these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord.
P: Amen.

SCRIPTURE AND MESSAGE: “Innkeeper: Unexpected Servant”
Pastor Wayne
Luke 2:1-7
About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the
Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to
travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the
Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a
descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was
pregnant.
While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her
firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room
in the hostel.
HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK LATELY? A time of sharing.
GIVING OUR GIFTS AND TITHES
Ginger McCauley
*DOXOLOGY NO. 95: “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”
*OFFERTORY PRAYER (Unison)
Pastor Wayne
God of wisdom, may you inspire us once again to become openhanded
givers in this world of “looking out for #1.” Offer us the courage to be
compassionate toward others and forgiving in spirit. Remind us that others
gladly come to our aid, and help us pay that generosity forward. Amen.
*CLOSING HYMN NO. 234: “O Come, All Ye Faithful” (Vs. 1-3)
*BENEDICTION (Unison)
Pastor Wayne
Now, go into the world of interruptions, thankful for the interruptions of
Mary, Joseph, the innkeeper, and most of all of Jesus, who allowed himself to
be so interrupted by our need that he sacrificed all for us. Go and likewise
allow yourself to be interrupted by the needs of others.
(*Indicates to stand as you are able)
