Integrated Task
RL 3.3
After reading a story, students will independently write journal entries describing
how and why the characters feelings change as the plot progresses. To start the
process:
1. Students will read story “Allie’s Basketball Dream.” (RF 4).
2. Choose a statement given by Allie from the story and pose the question which
can be completed as exit ticket:
o In (title of story), what can be learned about (character) when she said
(statement)?
o What details from the story support your answer? (RL1, RL3, W4, W10,
L3)
3. Choose a sentence from story and pose the question which can be completed as
exit ticket:
o Read the sentence from paragraph ____ of (title of story). What does the
word ______ mean as it is used in the sentence?
o Which details from the story support your answer? (RL1, RL4, W4, W10,
L3, L4, L5)
4. Review/Model “Opinion Writing Rubric 3rd Gr” so students understand
learning expectations for upcoming writing piece. Students should have their
own copy.
5. In partners/triads, students will discuss in their own words one key event in the
story that involves the main character. Then they will answer “What character
traits or motivations made this event happen?” Students will use Accountable
Talk Prompts/Stems as appropriate for the conversation. Model of this lesson
can be found at https://learnzillion.com/lessons/1917-describe-a-character-straits-using-key-events listed in resources column of this document. (RL1, RL3,
SL1, SL2, SL3, SL6, L3, L6)
6. As a team, students will complete the graphic organizer (each has own copy).
Students will use Accountable Talk Stems as appropriate for the conversation.
7. Complete step 2 for different key event. (RL1,RL3, RL10, SL1, SL2, SL3, SL6, L3,
L4, L5, L6, W4)

8. Have teams capture their work and record their thinking for the two events
using “Explain Everything” App, “Educreations” App or word processor on
computer (RL1,RL3, RL10, SL1, SL2, SL3, SL6, L3, L4, L5, L6, W4, W6)
9. Teams will break up and students will independently write in their journal
describing 3 key events and how and why Allie’s feelings change as the plot
progresses. Events one and two will be based on the work done with their group
in steps 5, 6, and 7 above. The third event will be a new event students will
produce that is supposed to take place a day after Allie plays her basketball
game. Students will include their opinion about whether or not the traits were a
weakness or strength for the character citing reasons for their opinion. (W1,
W4, W5, W10, L3, L6)
10. Pairs/Triads will come back together and read journal entries to each other.
Listeners in group will ask reader, “In your opinion, how do Allie’s traits and
actions contribute to the story’s events?” Reader must answer in complete
sentences and provide evidence for his/her opinion. 3rd Grade Listening and
Speaking Rubric, Gr2-3 Speaking and Listening Rubric (RL1, RL3, RL10, SL1,
SL2, SL3, SL6, RF3, RF4, L3, L6)
Writing can be scored using “Opinion Writing Rubric Gr. 3.” Students will selfassess. Allow for revising and editing before turning in final written product.
Teacher will use same rubric.
