Item #5 – for decision Manitoba Branch Report Ending June 30th, 2013 In 2013, Manitoba Branch continues to address its main challenge: build/retain a Fund Development team of professionals to successfully: solicit Campaign and Major Gift raise funds to cover local services and operations support National Programs With a very competent Manager in place, we struggle to secure the right support positions (i.e. Campaign Coordinator, Walk Coordinator, etc.) Despite these challenges, the Branch continues to work towards accomplishing its budget for 2013. In fact, we added a Special Event, the “Hope Affair Gala”, in partnership with the Canadian Society of Nephrology, the Manitoba Renal Program and Transplant Manitoba. This inaugural event was organized in less than four months and raised $23,000 for a new Krescent grant. To June 30th, the Branch’s financial position is summarized as follows: Under Budget Revenue Generators: Kidney Cars Door to Door Walk (Sept 2013) Branch Events Individual/Corporate Support Bequests Programs: Total Fund Development Total Programs Total Support Services Over Budget 209K * * * It should be noted that fund development total is above budget, without bequest revenue. The branch’s largest special event will take place on Sept. 8th: The Kidney Ride * Glide * Stride event, which is on track to raise more than the budgeted $60,500 net. As well, the Branch has agreed to September/October, on a “cost-plus” basis. Kidney Clothes expansion to Winnipeg, in For the Programs portfolio, the Branch is addressing the needs of those affected by kidney disease now, more than ever before! A new advocacy project has successfully rallied patients utilizing home hemodialysis in Manitoba. Subsequently a proposal for Canada’s first comprehensive (out-of-pocket expenses) reimbursement program for these patients was presented to the Province of Manitoba representatives. Official response is expected this autumn. SeeKD Clinics are regularly hosted for local high risk groups, and are well received. The Branch Executive Director is currently discussing a new partnership with Heart and Stroke Foundation, (eventually Canadian Diabetes Association and/or National Aboriginal Diabetes Association) to provide more comprehensive “one-stop” Chronic Disease Prevention Clinics that travel across the Province of Manitoba. Interested corporate friends have already committed financial support for this unique initiative. Kidney Health work, focusing on prevention strategies, Eat Well and Be Active, are featured in the branch’s school curriculum designed for First Nations Youth, “Our Children * Their Health * Our Future.” This continues to be taught at several schools, and is supported by staff, with popular projects like “Drop the Pop.” March 31st saw the conclusion of “Manitoba’s Interlake: Our Health * Our Future,” a twoyear $140,000 project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, in partnership with the Interlake Regional Health Authority. Initially designed to work with Health Care Professionals to develop teaching tool(s) to describe the linkage between diabetes and kidney disease, outcomes included the very limited and below acceptable levels of knowledge possessed by the majority of health care professionals dealing with diabetic patients; we now recognize that education about the diabetes/kidney disease connection must start with the health care professionals, who are preoccupied with numerous other priorities. Administratively, the Branch hired additional clerical support this summer to review records imported for the national Raiser’s Edge fundraising data base to eliminate duplications and inaccurate records, ensuring quality, usable information. In addition, the Branch continues to provide all core services, as well as several non-core programs: The Branch has trained local volunteers for the Peer Support Program in 2013 Kidney Camp will take place in August and is externally funded by The Winnipeg Foundation The Annual Patient Symposium is planned for October 20th, with sponsorship already secured. Further, the branch expects to maintain its above average level of support to national per capita. Respectfully submitted J. Zacharias, President Manitoba Branch
