Course Goals
This course is designed to enhance student’s knowledge of mathematics in the following
areas: the number system, expressions & equations, geometry, ratios & proportional
relationships and statistics & probability. These skills are applied to situations and
scenarios found in the world around us. Students engage in daily lessons, assignments
and activities designed to strengthen problem solving skills. Students will communicate
their understanding of mathematical concepts in a variety of ways through both speaking
and writing.
Objectives
There are three critical areas of focus in 8th grade.
1.) Analyze two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle,
similarity and congruence and understanding and applying the Pythagorean
Theorem.
2.) Grasp the concept of a function and use functions to describe quantitative
relationships.
3.) Formulate and reason about expressions and equations, modeling bivariate data
with a linear equation and solve linear equations and systems of linear equations.
