RMMS Hosts BMX Competition
Rocky Mountain Middle School and
Wasatch High School in conjunction with
Slim and Knobby’s Bike Shop held a its
BMX competition on Tuesday, October
11th at the skate park in Heber. There
was a great turnout of spectators to watch
the tricks and amazing stunts by the
students registered in the competition.
Slim and Knobby’s provided the judges.
The competitors were given three one
minute runs to do tricks and show their
prowess on the bike. There was a “best
trick” competition also. At the end of the
competition Josh Abbot won first place in
both the general competition and best
trick. Josh won a new BMX bike donated
in part by Slim and Knobby’s and
purchased by the RMMS PTA. In second
place was Kaleb Roskelly winning a hat, tshirt and skull candy. In third place was
Jake Davis and fourth place Skyler
Folkman, each winning a hat or t-shirt.
This was a great event to spotlight the
students at RMMS. When students get
involved in activities at school, school is
more enjoyable and memorable. The
school’s cool to care program was in
action as classmates came and cheered on
the bikers and supported them. We look
forward to seeing this event again next
year.
Fall Break
There will be no school October 20th
and 21st for fall break. Enjoy and
holiday and be safe.
Information from the Library
Now that the school year is well
underway, some students now may start
to have overdue books from the library.
Students can check out up to three books
at a time and can have these books for
three weeks. We allow students to renew
books as often as needed. RMMS library
follows the secondary school library
policies and therefore can charge overdue
book fines. If a book is overdue a five
cent charge per day will be charged.
Please check with your student to see if
they have any charges. The library posts
all overdue books and fines on a poster
outside the library. We appreciate your
attention to helping your student get their
books turned in on time.
The library at Rocky Mountain Middle
School enjoys getting a book in every
student’s hand, and if you ever have any
questions about literacy or your child’s
books please contact Amanda Porter.
Scholastic Book Orders
All Scholastic Book Orders are done
through the library at RMMS. Each month
there is a new book order available in the
library. Book orders are due back to the
library the last Wednesday of each month.
With Christmas just around the corner,
Scholastic book orders are a great way to
give your student books at a great price.
If you would like to place an order and
don’t want your student to be aware of it,
Mrs. Porter can place the order and call
you directly to have the order picked up.
Each purchase through the Scholastic
book order gives books to the library and
classrooms at RMMS. Thank you for your
support and if you have any questions
contact Amanda Porter, the librarian at
RMMS.
There is and “APP” for that
program
Students at Rocky Mountain Middle
School had the opportunity to pledge to
not drink alcohol while underage and
instead find other activities that are
healthy and fun. With the help of the PTA,
the counselors had each student complete
a short survey about underage drinking,
fill out a pledge card, and sign a poster.
After doing these things each student
received a “APP” button. The students are
proud of their buttons and can be found
wearing them on their backpacks around
the school.
The next day to celebrate all the pledges
students made and to promote the APP
program, students participated in rock
wall climbing, geo-caching, and a popcorn
party. Students had a great time. We
want to thank the PTA for their help with
the activity and the Wasatch County
Health Department. We look forward to
more great “APP” activities throughout
the school year.
We have a prevention campaign for
Wasatch. It is sponsored by RMMS,
Wasatch High, and the Health Dept. the
program is called A.P.P. (Activities that
Promote Prevention) are campaign slogan
is "There is an APP for that". Wasatch
County has a higher underage drinking
rate than the state. Our goal is to help
students identify other activities they can
participate in our community.
Throughout the year we will have
monthly, activities during lunch and
reminders about A.P.P. Parents please
talk with your students and encourage
them to pledge to be alcohol free.
Parental disapproval is the number one
reason kids don’t drink! If you’d like more
information about underage drinking
facts, and how to talk to your student,
ParentsEmpowered.org is a great
website with lots of information and
resources.
Cool to Care Student Winners
Each week students can be rewarded with
a button for doing acts of kindness,
fulfilling a need in the school without
being asked, and other deeds that we
consider 212 degrees. Rocky Mountain
Middle School's motto is "to keep it 212."
Ask your student what it means to be 212
degrees.
When students turn in their button they
get to put their name on a grid with 212
spaces and they receive a gold “cool to
care” bracelet to wear. Each week a
number is drawn from the grid to award
the “cool to care” student of the week.
That student receives a T-shirt, and a
prize.
When the grid’s 212 spaces are filled
there will be a large prize giveaway. The
winner is Will McNaughtan winning an
ipod touch and Kalle Voeller as the runner
up.
The culture of RMMS is one of cool to care
with this new program. Students are
including others, reaching out to their
classmates when they need help with
school work, increasing participation in
clubs and intramurals, and doing good
deeds around the building. RMMS is a
great place to go to school.
