Macias Restis After School Project (MR)
Report, July 2010
The Macias Restis After School Project is sponsored by the Restis family from Greece. This project sponsors
110 children with a nutritious hot plate of food on daily basis with a weekend food parcel for a child.
Nutritional assessment of all the children which is done three times a year by our Dietician Jacque Treadway.
The next evaluation will take place in September. The project from Monday to Friday has different activities.
On Mondays and Friday it has leisure activities developed to teach children team work, creativity and
discipline. These activities are arts and craft, dance, music (guitar and recorder and choir), soccer, judo and
cricket. All these activities are supervised by the facilitators and volunteers. Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday we provide academic support to children in form of home work support, literacy and numeracy.
1. Story of the month
The Macias Restis after school children came back from holiday on the 13 July 2010. About 150 children
walked from the Makupula High School back to the Trust and filled the multipurpose hall. The Macias Restis
committee members and Education Committee members with the Trustees blessed the day with their
presence. The children were treated to a meal as a routine and later taken into small group in tour around
the building. They were taken from the exterior of the building to the interior as to orientate them about this
new building of theirs.
Oom Jannie Momberg addressed the children on the day. He said that this is their building they should take
good care of it, no papers should lie around and classes should be kept as clean as possible. It is the smiles
that everyone saw in them that made the day a day to remember and how they appreciated the new
beautiful centre. It is for this reason that we will always be thankful to the Macias Restis Family Trust for their
donation towards enriching and empowering our children.

3.
Next projects within the Macias Restis Project
The cooking project the work bid is done for After School catering. It has to be put on hold due to recent
developments that may result to change in structure.
The food garden is on the way; Tat’u Ntshwanti has started weeding to get the garden started. Few
children have shown interest in the food garden and we hoping that up to 10 children we can or should
volunteer them in the garden project. We are going to buy seedlings from this week onwards; we go a
few from Jacque Treadway.
4. Progress in month July 2010

A positive disciplinary system of rewards established in the after school.
As part of keeping the new premises clean and a measure to safe guard our children. The project
has given all learners name tags; these tags were present in the past. The difference is that at
present the children are given the responsibility to keep the name tags by themselves. This is to
shift the responsibility to them and as a result if a child loses a name tag the parent pays R20. At
present five name tags have been lost and parents have came in to pay for these lost name tags.
As noted in the last report that the grass will be ready in three weeks from the day of school’s
reopening. We informed the children of such and it seems that they are all willing and able to
work with us to maintain the good growth of the lawn in the play area. No children have played
in the lawn and we are pleased with their behaviour.
All classes have elected class representatives that look after the well being of the class and assist
in collecting of class material. All will be given special name tags and good work will be rewarded
with a certificate every term. Some acknowledgement goes a long way with children.
