COURSE OBJECTIVES: The term “suture” describes any strand of material utilized to legate blood vessels or approximate tissues. Successful dental surgery is dependent on accurate adaptation of the flaps. Various methods and materials have been used (sutures, stents, paste dressings, tissue tacks and adhesives) for precise flap placement. Suturing has remained the most popular method. The primary objective of any dental suturing is to position and secure surgical flaps in order to promote optimal healing (first / primary intention). Inadequate suturing may result in flap skipping, exposed bone / necrosis, pain and delayed wound healing. In this course; different suturing materials will be presented with detailed discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Suturing needles and instruments used during surgery will also be presented. Esthetic suturing techniques will be performed in live surgery and participants will be trained in the form of hands-on workshop on animal (cow) jaw model.
