Lesson Title: stain glass windows and gargoyles Grade Level: 5th grade Standards: Essential Questions: What is a stain glass window? What is a gargoyle? How are they considered art? Art they decorative or functional? What is the historical value of these pieces? Content: Architecture Art history Vocabulary : Gargoyle Renaissance Baroque Stained glass Cathedrals Clay Bisque Greenware Score Slip Knead hollow Objectives: 1. Students will research and discover through art history the value and purpose of different aspects of renaissance architecture. 2. Students will create a gargoyle using information learned about them including styles for specific purposes. 3. Students will create a stain glass window that tells part of a story in a similar manner that will be seen in examples and discussed about history of these windows. Lesson Plan/ Activity/ strategies: Instructional Strategies/Activities: Students will be learning about the history of Stain glass windows, and gargoyles. They will then be creating a Window by creating a design on window shaped sketch paper, then tracing over in onto transparency paper and filling in with permanent markers. Each window will be covered by a black boarder to represent window seals. Students will also create gargoyle out of clay. They will view the book entitled God Bless the Gargoyles, that includes both of these items, When we are finished we will compare our work with what we have learned, and what is in the book. Accommodations/Differentiation: Visual Learners: Demonstrations will be presented to students for all work that is to be done. Visual examples of good work and bad work will be shown to students. Key parts of lesson will be written or drawn on board, and remain there for the duration of the lesson. Oral Listeners: All directions will be told to students with repetition of key parts by students recited back to me. I will observe all students for other problems that may need assistance.
