Special Feature: Effects of Fragmentation Life on the Edge: Investigating Habitat Fragmentation, the Edge Effect and Associated Invasive Species in the Field By Tamara Sluss, Kentucky State University This field activity allows students to discover the impacts of habitat fragmentation on air and soil temperature, canopy cover, and invasive species presence. It is a versatile activity that can be conducted on a typical campus and modified based on resources available. Gibbs, SUNY-ESF This exercise involves measuring changes in a landscape as it is fragmented. Students begin with a blank grid then, mark grid squares in a progression that mimics fragmentation of the landscape by human colonization. Students invoke land use guidelines to examine how they might influence the outcome in terms of structure of the landscape and the biodiversity within it. An Assessment of Assemblage Nestedness in Habitat Fragments By Roarke Donnelly, Oglethorpe University This experiment illustrates how ecological theory can help conserve native species in a fragmented landscape. Student groups survey breeding birds in forest fragments, perform a statistical analysis, and assess the relative merits of the alternative hypotheses. Student groups complete the experiment by presenting scientific research posters Want more reports on fragmentation? Click here! National Disability Independence Day July 26, 2014 This day commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, 1990 National Science Foundation (NSF) NSF’s formal report, now in the form of a digest, on Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering. It provides statistical information about their participation in science and engineering education and employment. The Alliance for Students with Disabilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at University of Washington AccessSTEM is a central resource for publications, tutorials, ESA Education & Diversity training materials, videos, online Knowledge Base, and webbased learning environments for people with disabilities. Sponsored by the DO-IT program at the University of Washington. From College to Careers: Fostering Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in STEM This book is a collaborative project initiated to examine current issues and explore future directions for improving the academic success and career entry rate of postsecondary students with disabilities (SWDs) in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This publication contains chapters prepared by four groups of invited authors who shared their pertinent research findings, expert knowledge and views on key topics pertinent to this topic.
