Dear St. Mary Community,
We are moving ahead with the outdoor
sign for the parish and school. It will be placed
on Thornton near the southwest corner of the
church. That area will be a temporary location
until the new I-76/I-77 ramps are completed.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Annual
Christmas Brunch. Thanks to all involved and
to our Emcee, Greg Friedl.
Please say a prayer for our two
Confirmation candidates: Perry Antalek and
Matthew Crookston. To be confirmed Feb. 6th.
Thanks, Fr. Dan
Years
Bishop Richard G. Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland,
accepted our invitation to celebrate the Mass of the
church's Dedication on October 1, 2016 at 4:00 pm.
A dinner to mark the Centennial of the church will
follow immediately in the school cafeteria, as a
number of you preferred.
From the Annals of St. Mary, Akron (Continued from last week’s bulletin)… “In May (1915) the
ground was blessed and the work of construction
began. On August 29, 1915 Bishop Farrelly laid the
cornerstone of the new building. The work
progressed satisfactorily.
On October 1, 1916 the church was dedicated by
Bishop Farrelly. The sermon on the occasion was
preached by Father Edwad A. Mooney, D.D. ¹
There were 50 priests present for the dedication of
the church and the dinner in the parish house. In
the evening Bishop Farrelly confirmed a class of
650 candidates, 55 of whom were converts. ²
The new church, which is the present St. Mary
edifice, is designed after the Roman basilica style.
It is said to be a reproduction of the Duomo, the
Cathedral Church of Ostia, outside Rome, Italy. ³
The floor dimensions, 66 ft. x 132 ft., allow for a
seating capacity of 1,080 and a large sanctuary.
Sixteen massive granite pillars support the lofty
pointed ceiling. Indiana buff limestone serves for
the exterior. A high campanile tower which
ascends from the baptistery makes an imposing
sight. The three main entrances are of bronze. ⁴
Eighteen clearstory windows, now of stained glass,
were temporarily finished with cathedral glass. ⁵
The three altars, a pulpit, and baptismal font are
constructed of gray stone. The fourteen Stations of
the Cross are Della Robbian plaques. All the
statuary is carved from white marble. ⁶ The sturdy
pews and confessionals are fashioned of gray oak.
Within and without the church is designed to give
the double effect of beauty and stability.

Footnotes
¹ Father Edward A. Mooney became the first
Archbishop of Detroit, Michigan in 1937 and was
created a Cardinal in 1946 by Pope Pius XII.
² Can you imagine it? 650 people being confirmed
here in this church in one evening! They were
likely from neighboring parishes as well, but the
Bishop’s poor thumb!
³ See a resemblance to St. Mary? The bell tower,
for sure! This
Duomo or
Cathedral of
Ostia, was
completed in
1483 by
Cardinal
Giulliano della
Rovere (future
Pope Julian II)
who began the construction of the present Basilica
of St. Peter in the Vatican. The Duomo is dedicated
to the martyr St. Aurea. And, at times, you can see
it while landing at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.
⁴ Obviously, our doors are no longer bronze.
Anyone know when they were replaced with glass?
⁵ The windows depict the 15 mysteries of the
rosary; the first popes of the 20th century Pius X,
Benedict XV, Pius XI, Pius XII; and the bishops of
the Cleveland Diocese from the start of the parish:
Horstmann, Farrelly, Schrembs, and Hoban. Pope
Pius XII is the last shown, so the windows were
likely installed in his pontificate 1939 to 1958.
⁶ All the statuary is of marble, except that of St.
Therese of Lisieux.
