Introduction to the Lesson “Good morning Jean, how are you today? Last week when we did your assessment, we determined that it would be beneficial for you to learn some protective techniques. Today we are going to learn a few protective techniques that you can use all the time. Let’s start.” D. Presentation of Content 1. Discuss Upper Body Protective Technique: (put hand to opposite shoulder with palm facing outward. Then raise the hand upwards to cover face) 2. Have Jean practice the upper body technique by walking down a hall using the technique. 3. Lower Body Technique: (hold hand down across body with palm facing out) 4. Have Jean practice the lower body technique by walking down a hall using the technique. Place something in front of her such as a chair for her to run into with her hand) 5. Have Jean use both the upper and lower body techniques in conjunction while walking down the hall. 6. Discuss safe seating procedures: (find back of chair, find arms, feel seat, legs to the back of the seat then sit.) 7. Have Jean demonstrate the safe seating procedures. E. Practice and Feedback Guided: Steps 1, 3, and 6 Independent: Steps 2, 4, 5 and 7 Judicious: Once Jean masters the objectives, she will be able to use the skills she learned to protect herself when she is walking and finding a seat. Feedback: I will provide feedback throughout the lesson with specific praise. I will explain to her how she can use her skills in her future and highlight her strengths and weaknesses. Jean’s mastery of today’s lesson will be observed during future lessons. F. Summary of the Lesson “You did a great job today Jean! You learned several protective techniques including the upper and lower body protective techniques and safe seating techniques. You can use these techniques around your assisted living facility to make sure you don’t run into items or furniture that might be left out or moved without you knowing. Next week we will review these techniques and then work on other skills you can use to travel safely and independently. G. Evaluation of the Lesson For the evaluation of the lesson, I will record data on Jean’s progress on a separate data collection form. Progress will be noted in future lessons. H. Alternate Lesson: Landmarks and Clues/Locating Dropped Objects Date 1/23 Upper D I=independent D=Dependent X=Not performed Lower D Seating D Reflection Nettie “Jean” is a senior, older blind client who has gone completely blind in the past year due to pressure on the optic nerve. Recently, Jean has gained a small amount of vision and can now see some outlines of people and objects. She lives in a nursing home and is very efficient in getting around the nursing home, although occasionally she runs into things or trips. She wants to learn orientation and mobility so she will stay safe in her home and can educate the staff on how to keep her safe. Jean has already been using the safe seating techniques I showed her, and was pleased to hear that she was using a technique to keep her safe. The upper and lower arm protective techniques were new to her and she was excited to her learn. There have been instances of her running into open doors and furniture that has been moved around. The techniques I showed her will help protect her from these instances. Jean is very talkative, so the lesson was somewhat difficult to get through. I would say a few words and then she would go off on a tangent about something else. I could have improved the lesson by being more assertive and making sure she learned the material in a timely manner. Jean also always has her sister present at her lessons. Her sister can be helpful by telling me information about Jean that Jean does not always volunteer. But the sister is almost as talkative as Jean which makes it even more difficult to carry on with a lesson. It would benefit me to sit down with her sister and explain how I need to have some alone time with Jean. Overall I think the lesson went well. Jean demonstrated all of the techniques and explained how she will use them in the future.
