Speaker Profiles
Dr. Dermot Ruane,
Professional Work Experience Co-ordinator and Lecturer,
University College Dublin
Dr. Dermot Ruane is the Professional Work Experience Co-ordinator and overseer for the UCD
School of Agriculture & Food Science. He obtained a BAgrSC (General), MAgrSC and PhD in
Animal Science (nutrition) and an MBA from UCD. On joining the academic staff of UCD, he
lectured in Animal Science, Farm Buildings, Farm-Business Management and Rural
Development. He researched, supervised postgraduate students and published in each of
these areas. He was appointed Farm Manager at the University 600 ha mixed enterprise
estate farm at Lyons Estate responsible for the management of the commercial, research and
teaching operations on the Estate. He had 2 sabbaticals in the USA at Penn State and the
University of Minnesota in extension research. He held leadership positions in the Irish Farm
Building Association and Irish Society for Information Technology in Agriculture. He is a former
president of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) and a Board member of the Association
for International Agricultural and Extension Education (AIAEE). He contributed many papers to
conferences nationally and internationally. Within UCD, he was a member of the Faculty and
School executive for 10 years. He held leadership roles as Section Head (HoD) and Chair of the
School Executive within the School. He now works in a part-time capacity.
Matt Rafferty,
Head of Underwriting, IPB Insurance
Matt Rafferty is the Head of Underwriting at IPB Insurance. He is responsible for all aspects
of the company’s underwriting process - risk selection, product pricing, policy wordings
and underwriting authorities. Matt has over 40 years’ experience in the Irish Market
having previously held senior executive positions in AIG and most recently with QBE. In
these roles, Matt’s responsibilities extended to the day-to-day administration and
management of the business environment of a comprehensive array of product lines
transacted by the business. Matt played a leading role in the tone and direction of
creating business opportunities that were aligned to the objectives as outlined in the
business strategic plans.

International Placement Manager,
Aston University, UK
With a HR and International Recruitment background, Carolina has been with Aston
University since 2008. She was initially based in the Business School with a focus on
International Placements Business Development, and was responsible for setting up a
robust foundation of international contacts who continue recruiting Aston’s placement
students worldwide across all the Schools. Carolina currently manages Aston’s
International Placements Team following the centralisation process in 2011, a
multicultural specialist team who supports over 320 year-placements abroad, including
the management of the International Business Development activity and the outgoing
Erasmus process. Her team ensures that the number of students placed overseas grows
every year, with currently 33% of total Aston placements taking place outside of the UK.
Some of this activity has positively contributed to the recent ‘Best Placement University
Service 2014’ award won by Aston Placements’ Team at the NUE Awards in March.
Ms Carla Naltchayan,
Cooperative Education Manager,
International Programme, University of Limerick
Carla Naltchayan has been responsible for the International Placements within
the Co-Operative Education and Careers Division at the University of Limerick
for nearly three years. She promotes the Programme across Europe, the US,
China, Japan and has recently developed new placement opportunities in the
Middle-East, primarily for student engineers. Prior to joining UL, she was
involved in promoting Ireland overseas; with Fáilte Ireland she worked
alongside accommodation providers and tour operators to help them promote
their product internationally. Also, with the Dublin International Foundation
College, she was responsible for recruiting students from China and SaudiArabia. With a strong international experience and multilingual skills, she
worked in France with large medical organisations on international congresses
and was also involved with the Delegation of the European Commission to the
Republic of Lebanon in Beirut during the troubled times of 2005, working on
bilateral cooperation projects between the EU and Lebanon. She holds a
Master’s degree in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the
University of Paris XIII and specialised in Civil-military management of external
crises in the prestigious Ecole Militaire in Paris. With an avid interest in
geopolitics, Carla focused her research on the relationship between Lebanon
and Israel and the importance of water in the conflict.
