Duration: May 15th – August 31st (12 weeks within this date range))

Position Location: NOLS Rocky Mountain, Lander, Wyoming
Pay: $360/week, plus travel reimbursement up to $600
Food and Lodging: Meals are provided when students are at the branch (approximately
50% of meals). Housing is not provided by NOLS for summer fellows at NOLS Rocky
Mountain. Lander has a fairly robust rental market, with rooms available for short-term
sublet. Opportunities to housesit for NOLS employees may also exist; however, they
cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, there is free camping in City Park, which many
interns, fellows, and instructors take advantage of.
Position Description:
The goal of the NOLS Rocky Mountain Fellowship is to provide the fellow with practical
experience and valuable exposure to every facet of in-town work at the School.
The fellow will spend time assisting the outfitting, rations, program, and special projects
(outreach) departments, learning the skills needed to support students and staff embarking
on extended wilderness expeditions.
In addition to assisting in the daily operations of NOLS Rocky Mountain, the fellow will
take on self-directed projects, including those that further the diversity and inclusion
goals of the School. These may include:
 Working directly with students from our Gateway Partner organizations, many
who come from urban areas and are new to outdoor experiences. This will include
personally reaching out to these students before their courses to answer any lastminute questions; welcoming them to the Rocky Mountain campus; and assisting
them throughout the issue and outfitting process.
 Planning outreach events for local students and their families in the Lander
community.
 Attending a Cultural Competency Seminar, a professional development
opportunity for field instructors and in-town staff.
 Providing logistical and programmatic support for custom NOLS Professional
Training courses. This may include overnight travel to NOLS Rocky Mountain
River Base, in Vernal, Utah, or NOLS Three Peaks Ranch, in Boulder, Wyoming
 Organizing a two-day top-rope rock climbing experience for incoming first-years
at Lander Valley High School and a three-day climbing experience for students
from CityKids, in Washington, DC
 Developing curriculum and instructor resources on emerging topics in diversity
and inclusion
 Other duties as assigned by the special projects coordinator
Qualifications:
 At least 21 years old
 Graduate/participant of a NOLS field expedition course/WMI course/NOLS Pro
course preferred
o If not a NOLS graduate, applicant must demonstrate an interest in working
in outdoor or experiential education
 U.S. citizen and ethnically American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or
African American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, or multiracial
(categories defined by the EEOC, U.S. Census Bureau)
 Self-directed and motivated
 Exceptional “expedition behavior” (EB)
 Competent with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
 Excellent critical thinking and communication skills
 Ability to work well in a dynamic environment and adjust priorities quickly
 Thorough, punctual, dependable, and nice
 Understanding and passion for the NOLS mission
 Physically able to bend, stoop, crouch, lift (up to 40 lb.), frequent walk, and stand
for extended periods of time
Post-fellowship: The fellowship is designed, in part, to bring more women and men of
color into outdoor education. In the selection process, preference will be given to
applicants with an interest in pursuing a career as a NOLS instructor. For those fellows
who perform well and qualify, NOLS will provide a formal path to becoming a field
instructor. Fellows will also be asked to serve as a NOLS ambassador for a minimum of
one year following their fellowship, specifically working with NOLS diversity and
inclusion and marketing outreach efforts in their local communities.

employees.
