Winter 2011
AUTUMN TERM
All of our riding sessions are held outside at
Grasslands.
We either ride in the ménage, where
more riding skills are taught, or unless the
ground is too wet, we go for a walk around
the fields.
The weather allowed us a full terms riding
until the final week before Christmas, when,
Who
arecold,
we?
because of the
snow and
we had to
cancel.
Sadly we had to cancel Father Christmas!!
Our Horses
There are some lovely horses kept at
Grasslands, many of them perfectly
suitable for our riders.
The horses need to be very calm: our
children can be very ‘flappy’ with
arms and legs and on occasions very
noisy, both can upset the horses.
They also need to be quite content to
not only have a rider but also a
leader and a side walker to help with
the child.
We use a maximum of 6 horses during
the morning at the moment: Lady,
Muffin, Nibbles, Sunset, Ionka and
Fozzy.
LADY
Lady, below, is a skewbald mare.
She is 13hh and about 15years old’
She is a very sweet, kind pony and very keen to
‘walk on’ once her rider has mounted.
IONKA
Ionka is a 15.1hh Haflinger palomino.
She is about 12 years old and very gentle.
He has a lovely quirk whereby he moves his
bottom lip repeatedly as though he is talking
to you.

I CAN
By John Anthony Davies
I cannot walk or run, or play
A game of tennis every day.
I cannot dance or ride a bike,
I’ll never know what skating’s like.
I have no soccer boots or ball,
They are no use to me at all.
I’ll never ski the waves or snow
So many thrills I’ll never know
I’ll never sail the wind or surf
Or chase a ball across the turf,
Nor climb the snow capped peaks above,
So many things I’ll never love.
But I can ride through forest trails
To see the fox and rabbit tails
And watch the geese and ducks take flight
While leaping stags and deer take fright.
And I can follow mountain tracks
Past climbers weighted down with packs,
To trace a river to it’s source
Astride the broad back of a horse.
Yes, I enjoy the ‘sport of King’s’
When carried high my feet take wings.
To fly me on a pleasure course,
For I can mount and ride a horse.
