Problem Solving - 19th March 2015 Sessions & Timing of the day Registration from 9.00am. The day will start promptly at 9.30am and conclude at 3.30pm. Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided. Please advise at the time of booking if you have any specific dietary needs. Session 1: Exploring teachers’ subject knowledge of problem solving. (To be able to teach problem solving, you need to solve problems yourself!) Not threatening! Session 2: Navigating and teaching the 8 Problem Solving Strategies. Lunch (There will be an opportunity to tour the school at this stage). Session 3: Progression and continuity in Problem Solving. Planning and assessment, as well as tracking the 8 Problem Solving Strategies. Introducing the ‘STOPS’ system. Session 4: Developing ‘Gecko Maths’ – collaborative cooperative problem solving. Learning from our colleagues in the Far East. Practical teaching resources will be provided for delegates who attend. Course Content The 8 Problem Solving Strategies. (Act it out, trial & error, trial by improvement, making a list, looking for patterns, simplifying the problem, working backward, algebraic approach). Planning and assessment. Ray Maher Maths Matters & John Perryn Primary School Ofsted - July 2013 Ray Maher is an internationally acclaimed specialist Maths consultant with an outstanding track record of supporting schools to rapidly improve their Maths teaching. Ray has worked as a headteacher and lead consultant with Bradford Local Authority before successfully working with schools both nationally and internationally. Since Ray began working with us at John Perryn Primary School in January 2012, coupled with our staff team’s hard work, the school has scored above 94% Level 4 and above 66% Level 5 in Maths in Key Stage 2 SATs 2012 & 2013 and a Maths Progress score of 103.4 (July 2013). More recently, we were rated as 4th in Ealing based on combined SATs results and awarded a prize in recognition of the progress of our Pupil Premium pupils (104.4).
