The Student Housing and Hospitality Services office (SHHS) is located in Laird Hall 107. You can contact
this office at 514-398-7716 during weekdays from 8:30am to 4:30pm, or in case of EMERGENCIES, see

The SHHS staff consists of Lindsay O’Connell, Manager of Campus Housing and Gerry Chevalier,
Coordinator of Campus Housing. The following is an outline of our role:
1. The SHHS is responsible for carrying out the details of initial room allocation. Residents who
find the initial room allocation unsuitable for their needs must submit their request for room
reallocation to the Campus Housing. Requests will be accommodated whenever possible.
2. The SHHS will receive recommendations from the House Committee for physical
improvements in the residence.
3. The SHHS is to keep the House Committee advised of proposals and discussions affecting the
welfare of residents.
4. The SHHS will cooperate with and assist the House Committee, Residence Monitor whenever
possible in the discharge of its responsibility/(ies).
5. The SHHS will keep an up-to-date list of residents and will circulate this list to other
responsible interested parties.
Dear residents,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Macdonald Campus Residences. You will live in
residences memorable experiences of friendship in a comfortable environment. As
monitor of residences, my responsibility is to supervise that all students are having
pleasant time in residences. With Mario Roy, Emily Poon, Taiga Cholette and Diane
Maheu, we will be available for your questions or requests. But the good order of
residence life cannot be achieved without your cooperation. In this regard, two
ingredients are necessary. First, we need your input and involvement on your residence committee; the
Laird Hall House Committee (LHHC). This involvement ensures that we will have a dynamic residence
life. Second, the respect of other residents will permit to have a smooth and friendly place to live. So I
wish you a good year in residence and look forward to see you enjoying your life in residence.

LAIRD HALL EMERGENCY & FIRE ALARM PROCEDURES
In view of the sensitivity of the fire detection system in this building,
residents should exercise caution while cooking, baking etc. (always use
vent hoods). Frequent false alarms tend to cause annoyance rather
than alertness. Should an alarm be triggered intentionally or by
accident, please report it immediately to security personnel (LH 101)
(398-7777 or 398-7770). The building is equipped with heat sensors,
smoke detectors, pull stations and sprinklers. Should any one of these
4
be activated, an alarm will sound throughout the building. The fire panel is located in the Laird Hall
main lobby and is monitored by Service de Sécurité Incendie de Montréal. If a fire is discovered, activate
the nearest pull station.
Procedure as stipulated in McGill Fire Prevention Procedures/Policies:
In case of fire: “Anyone discovering a fire, smoke, strong smell of burning or of an unusual nature,
should immediately:

Pull the fire alarm station.

If it is safe and you are trained to do so, use the correct fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Begin evacuation procedures as described below.

Once evacuated, inform the authorities of the location and nature of the fire, the unsafe exits,
persons requiring assistance, and other pertinent details.

Remain available to the responding security agent(s) to provide details for the incident report.
In the event of a fire alarm in your building:

Secure any hazardous materials before leaving and perform any required equipment shutdown
procedures.

Evacuate the premises in a swift, orderly fashion using the nearest safe exit.

DO NOT use the elevators.

Follow the instructions of the evacuation team.

Provide assistance to persons with disabilities or with special needs.

Move completely away from the building. Go to the Centennial Centre, as directed by the
evacuation team, or move at least 100 meters away from the building.

When you are away from any danger, call 911 and Macdonald Campus Security at 514-3987777.

If you have specific knowledge about the evacuation or incident, remain available to the
responding security agents and emergency authorities. Inform them of the location and nature
of the fire, injuries, persons requiring assistance and other pertinent details. Remain available
to the responding security agent(s) to provide details for the incident report.

Re-enter the premises only when it is officially authorized.

Remember: your personal safety comes first
FAILURE TO EXIT DURING A FIRE ALARM WILL RESULT IN A FINE (1st offense).
Note: Room doors must remain unlocked to allow a rapid search for residents who may still be inside
the residence. If doors are locked, authorized personnel reserve the right to enter with a key or by
5
force, in which case the occupant(s) of the room will be charged for the damage. These measures apply
only in real emergencies.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Familiarize yourself with the evacuation plans posted in your area of the building. Emergency exit doors
located on the ground floor of the building are to be used ONLY IN CASES OF EMERGENCY. Residents
opening emergency exits unnecessarily will be reprimanded. Be aware of the location of extinguishers,
and how to use them.
"ABC" type extinguishers (orange cylinders) are available in corridors and kitchens. The extinguisher
nozzle must be aimed at the BASE of the flame and be discharged completely in one shot.
CANDLES, SPARKLERS, INCENSE AND OTHER SOURCE OF OPEN FLAME
Please note that the use of candles, sparklers and incense or any source of prolonged open flame is
prohibited within the residence (including bedrooms). Residents responsible of leaving open flames
unattended will be reprimanded, and upon multiple infractions could be expelled from the residence.
Sources of open flames prohibited from use within the residence include: candles, incense, sparklers,
propane lanterns, cooking fuel/fondue liquid, and cigarettes.
DEEP-FAT FRYING AND BBQ
Please note that deep-fat frying such as French fries or any other deep-fat frying food is not authorized
anywhere in residence. Students and/or group of students wanting to have a BBQ outside the residence
building, must obtain permission from the Campus Housing Office and receive authorization from
McGill Fire Prevention Department.
CLOSED CIRCUIT CAMERA
Closed circuit camera equipment has been installed throughout public areas in Laird Hall Residence. Our
goal is to ensure the safety and security of our residents and their belongings. Those who commit theft
and vandalism will be held accountable using video evidence of their transgressions, regardless of time
of day or night. Remember food theft is also considered a serious offence.
POWER FAILURE
In case of a power failure, please turn off or unplug all electrical appliances in use (stove, oven, toaster,

MAINTAINING CLEANLINESS WITHIN THE RESIDENCE
Laird Hall is one of the best maintained residences you’ll ever see. The cleaning staff does a top-notch
job in keeping the building clean, but THEY NEED YOUR HELP.
A. Rooms: Lack of hygiene in a room will be reported to the Student Housing and Hospitality
Services or Housekeeping Staff. A staff member will inspect the room and give the resident 24
hours to clean it to an acceptable level of hygiene. The room will be inspected a second time at
the end of the 24 hour period. Refusal to comply or a second complaint against the same
8
resident may result in expulsion from the residence, following written notice from Student
Housing and Hospitality Services
B. Bathrooms: Sinks and bathtubs must be cleaned after use and this includes removal of dirt,
soap suds, hair, etc. Shower curtains must be kept closed while showering to prevent water
from spilling on the tile floor, as this creates a hazard to walking. When using the toilets, the
resident must not soil the toilet seats or floor area around the toilet and must flush after using
the toilet. Residents are expected to observe at least these elementary rules of hygiene. The
bathrooms are shared facilities.
C. Kitchens: The sinks, oven, range, counter and/or table must be cleaned after each meal for
the next person. Kitchens are shared facilities. Kitchen utensils belonging to Laird Hall (various
toasters, microwave ovens) should be cleaned also as they are shared by everybody. Spills
should be wiped immediately. Check all of your food periodically from the refrigerator. Rotten
food should be thrown out. All food should be kept in sealed containers. No equipment or food
is allowed on the lockers in the dining-room. Items placed in the refrigerators and freezers
should be labeled with your name. Alcohol beverages are not to be placed in the kitchen
refrigerators.
RED Dish containers are located in each kitchen and are used for the removal of pots & dishes
which have been left lying around for at least 24 HOURS. The containers will be emptied each
WEDNESDAY, and their contents will be DISCARTED each FRIDAY.
PETS
No pets are allowed in Laird Hall. This includes dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, insects and small
mammals.

QUIET HOURS
Note that quiet hours are between 10:00 pm and 07:00 am during the regular semester
