Welcome: I would like to welcome each student to my class. I am looking forward to getting to know each student this year and I am excited about my new role within the special education department at
Walton-Verona. I look forward to working with each student and their family. It is my goal to provide for all students in a fun, safe, and creative way. I feel privileged to have your child in my class and I am excited about the upcoming school year.
Mission: The mission of the Walton-Verona Independent Schools is to develop motivated, decisive individuals who possess the skills and attitudes necessary for productivity and social interaction and realize the need for continued learning by providing a dedicated staff, an appropriate curriculum, and the necessary facilities through an independent school system in partnership with the home and community.
The Walton-Verona Independent School District believes:
The education process must be a shared responsibility of home and school.
Learning is a lifelong process. · Everyone is entitled to an education.
The school and community are partners.
Students are individuals.
Motivation is essential to learning.
Education contributes to the development of responsible and productive citizens.
Education must be responsive to change.
In The Walton-Verona Independent School District, the student will:
Possess the skills and attitudes necessary for productivity.
Recognize the need for continued learning.
Be motivated to do their best.
Understand their role as contributing members in a democratic society.
Develop skills for social interaction while retaining their own individuality.
Develop decision-making skills .
Expectations: I expect all students to come to school prepared with a positive attitude, to be polite and courteous, and be ready to work hard. All staff will be prepared to do the same. Students will be challenged while being given the supports that they need. Each student will be rewarded for positive
behaviors, actions, and work. They will be pushed to become as independent as possible. Our goal is to prepare each student for life upon completing high school.
Life Skills: In addition to the academic courses each student is taking, life skills will be tied into each.
Students will be given the opportunity to cook, do laundry, and clean within the classroom. Students will also learn such necessary skills as using the telephone, telling time, handling money, filling out job applications, knowing personal information etc.
Community Based Instruction: Twice a month the class will be taking a community based instruction trip. Letters will be sent home prior to each trip as the destinations change each time. Each outing we include lunch. It is the responsibility of the parent to provide money for the child to eat lunch on. If this is not possible you can send a pack lunch or we can get one from the cafeteria prior to departure. The students prepare for the trips as a part of their daily instruction and the trips serve as a culminating activity for prior lessons.
Occupational Skills: Students will be working on a number of occupational skills daily. There will be numerous jobs throughout the school building that students will take part in. Some of these jobs will include collecting attendance slips, laundry, sorting mail, office jobs, light cleaning and filling vending machines. These daily jobs will help promote future success in the workplace and promote independence.
Communication: Communication with the student’s family is very important for me and for the success of the student. You may call me, email me, or send messages through the student’s assignment book as frequently as you like. My contact information is at the top of this paper. Planning time is also listed but
I will take phone calls at any time during the day. Everyday your child will also fill out a daily sheet including specific things they did that day and include comments from teachers and staff. The sheet will be copied and sent home daily for you to view. Every other week you will also receive a copy of your child’s progress in meeting their IEP goals. This will be mailed to you. You can also check on your student’s grades in Infinite Campus and can view the Walton-Verona website for information.
Student Planners/Take Home Folders: Each student will receive their own assignment notebook. This will be filled out daily with the help of a teacher, staff, or peer tutor. This is one way for me to communicate with parents as little notes or reminders will be left in there. Please review the notebook each night. Students will take the assignment books home each night and be asked to bring them to school with them every day. Students will also have a take home folder that will contain any homework,
papers from me, notification of upcoming events, etc. This will also need to be checked each night and returned.
Peer Tutors: There is a peer tutoring program at Walton-Verona. Upperclassmen had to apply for the positions and were hand selected by the staff here at school. The peer tutors will be assisting students in regular education classes, physical education classes, lunch, community based instruction outings and in the classroom depending on schedules and availability. This is a wonderful program that will benefit all parties involved.
Supplies: Most all supplies are provided for the students in my class such as paper, pencils, notebooks, etc. But they are welcome to bring their own if they have personal preferences. I do ask that each child get one folder to become their take home folder and every student bring in supply for our classroom.
This can include: a box of tissues, roll of paper towels, hand soap or sanitizer, Lysol, or any baking dry goods needs such as cake mix, vegetable oil, sugar, brownie mix, etc.
Student Work: I will be keeping a majority of your child’s classroom work here on file at school. If you wish to see some or all of their work please let me know and I will be happy to send home a copy.
Again, I am greatly looking forward to this school year and to working with you and your child over the course of the year. Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Let’s have a great year!
Ms. Sayler
