Kindergarten General Information School Phone Number: (254) 336-1900 School Hours: 7:25 - 2:45 Student Lunch Time: 11:05– 11:35 Parent/Teacher Relationship: I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for your child to have a successful year. Throughout the year I will be communicating with you through notes, emails, telephone calls, newsletters, 9-weeks report cards, and parent teacher conferences. If you have any questions please set up a conference by sending an email at toni.gullekson@killeenisd.org. Please subject with your child’s first and last name. My conference time is 1:05-1:45, except Wednesdays due to grade level meetings. Parent Participation: Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies or treats. Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school. Thank you! Money On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope inside the zipper pouch located in your child’s daily communication folder, with the following information written on it: 1. Your child’s first and last name. 2. The amount of money. 3. The purpose for the money (lunch etc.) 4. My name (Mrs. Gullekson) If the envelope is left on the bus or dropped in the hallway, this information will help the money to be returned to my classroom. School Procedures: Sign In/Sign Out: If your child has an appointment and will need to be picked up early, please send me a note in his/her travel folder so that I can have your child ready to go. When you come to pick up your child, you must stop by the office to sign him/her out. The office will call the classroom and I will send your child to the front to go home with you. If your child is coming to school late, due to an appointment, your child must sign in at the office. The office will call down the classroom, and either staff or assigned classroom buddies will come to escort your child to the classroom. Absences/Tardies: If your child is absent, please be sure to send me a note in the home folder the day your child returns to school. Your note should include your child’s name, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence and your signature. You may also send a doctor’s note. If your child has no note, their absence may be considered “unexcused.” The first bell rings at 7:25am and school officially starts with the 7:30am bell. Your child will be considered tardy if he/she arrives after the school announcements have begun. Please remember you must also stop by the office to sign in your child so that they may receive a pass to class. If your child arrives after the announcements and does not have a pass, he/she will be sent to the office to get one. Visitors: All visitors must sign in at the office before coming to class. The office will give you a pass to wear while on campus. This is for the safety of all on campus. Medications: the school nurse administers all medications. Cough drops are considered “medication,” so please see the nurse about those as well. Dismissal/Transportation Changes: Your child can only be released to individuals who are on the enrollment form. If you need to add an authorized person who will be picking your child up from school, please see the office staff. If you need to make a change in your child’s transportation (bus, parent pick up, after school care, etc.), please send a note in the daily communication folder. Only changes in writing, prior to the date of change, will be allowed. Unless it is an emergency, please make plans ahead and do not call the office and change your child’s transportation that day. This is confusing to all concerned. Thanks in advance!! Each child will also receive a yellow sheet of paper with their first and last name as well as their grade level written on it. If your child is a car rider, please make sure to place this sign on the right side of your vehicle on the dashboard. If your child does not normally go home as a car rider we suggest keeping this sign in your car anyway for those days when sudden transportation changes may arise. This will greatly help the car rider lane move smoothly and quickly throughout the year. Classroom Procedures: Daily Communication Folder: Your child will bring home a communication folder everyday. In this folder you will see academic home resources and behavior calendar that describes your child’s behavior in class and the classroom expectations. Also, you will find blank paper, in which you can send me notes if needed. Information from school and homework will also be sent in the folder. Folders need to be returned daily and signed. Lunch: Your child may choose to either eat the cafeteria lunch or he/she can bring a lunch box. If your child brings a lunch box, please make sure his/her name is on it. If your child is going to eat a cafeteria lunch, please be sure that he/she has lunch money or money in their school account. Our lunchtime is 11:05 but may be subject to change. You are welcome to come eat lunch with your child any day, except on designated STARRS testing days for upper grade levels. **New this year, if you bring a lunch for your child, it must be dropped off in the office by 10:00 AM.** If not, your child will have to get a tray from his/her lunch account. If there is no money, they will be provided a cheese sandwich. If you have questions on this policy, please call the office. Snacks: We will have a “snack time” in our classroom in the morning. Children must bring in their own healthy snack. Remember it’s just a snack, not a meal—nothing that will take too long to eat or require utensils. Please be sure items are individually wrapped and explain to your child that it will need to stay in their cubby until snack time. Please no juice or sodas just water. Nap Time: Towels will be used for naptime each day and will return home in the backpack on Fridays. Please make sure towels are small enough to fit in your child’s cubby. Unfortunately, there is no additional space for pillows, stuffed animals, or rest mats. Please wash towels before returning on Monday. After the 1st nine weeks, we will no longer have naptime. Extra Clothes: Please feel free to send an extra change of clothes in a labeled bag just in case of accidents. Birthdays: The state of Texas has strict guidelines regarding snacks. If your child wishes to bring a special class snack on their day, the cupcake law allows this exception. However, district policy does not allow home baked goods or party invitations to be passed out at school. Due to Texas law we will only be able to celebrate with cupcakes after 2:00pm. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask and thank you for your cooperation! Please notify the school nurse and classroom teacher if your child has any food allergies that will prevent him/her from eating a cupcake, so arrangements can be made. Library: The class goes to the library once a week. After the first few weeks, children are able to check out books and bring them home. You will be responsible for care and return of the book. Please return book on the day before our library day. If your child does not bring back the book, they cannot check a new one out. If the book is lost you will be responsible for paying for the lost book. PE: Wear tennis shoes on our PE days: Tuesdays and Fridays. I look forward to a wonderful year! Sincerely, Mrs. Gullekson
