Your Companion
The WA Companion Card Newsletter
Issue 6, 2014
Welcome to the sixth edition of Your Companion
Featuring a range of information for cardholders and familes,
plus an up-to-date list of WA Affiliates.
Fly with your Companion
Our campaign to sign Virgin Australia as an affiliate
In September, we asked cardholders to send us powerful
stories and photos about the difference it would make to the
lives of people with disability to have the airline as an affiliate.
We were overwhelmed with the response with over 70 emails!
Our next step will be to approach Virgin Australia and Sir
Richard Branson with a strong case, and your stories will
highlight the strong need for Virgin Australia to become an
affiliate of the Companion Card program.
Thank you to everyone who got in contact with us! We will keep
you informed of our progress.
In the meantime, here are some of the stories which capture
why Virgin needs to get on-board:
“In 2011, I accompanied my 30 year old daughter Erin, who has
cerebral palsy with speech and intellectual disability, on a
SkyWest flight to Broome. Erin really enjoys travelling but
needs assistance.
The Companion Card program has allowed Erin to experience
many things. When I am unable to accompany her, the card
allows paid carers to help Erin access her local community
which has improved her quality of life. We are very grateful to
all the affiliates and would appreciate Virgin Australia to sign up
as an affiliate.” – Debi Stapleton
“I am a mother and grandmother living with MS. I’ve been
looking forward to my ‘reward’ years and having time to do
things for myself after years of paid and volunteer work.
One of the many things on my list was travel, both within and
out of Australia. I have been able to do some limited travelling
however because I always need to have someone with me to
assist me. I am only able to do half the amount of travel I would
like. Effectively, it costs me double what it costs everyone else
for airfares alone and this is through no fault of my own.
With close and extended family spread around Australia, I
would dearly love to be able to do more than just phone or
Skype them now and again.” - Sheila Anderson
Event Cinemas - National Update
We’re excited to confirm that Event Cinemas will offer
complimentary admission to companions for any session in
traditional, 3D, Vmax or Gold Class upon the presentation of a
current Companion Card.
These changes will be implemented nationally and included
alternate content sessions and sessions on the ‘No Free Ticket’
list. Cardholders will also be charged at concession prices, if
applicable. Please note, these changes are not valid for online
bookings and 3D glasses are not included in admission.
From the team, we extend a huge thank you to Event Cinemas
for the generous extension to their services.
Nominate your Stars!
The 2015 Disability Support Awards are an opportunity for
people with disability, and their families and carers to recognise
support people who have made a significant difference to their
life and to celebrate their outstanding quality of work and
commitment.
We want to hear stories from people with disability about the
support people who have improved their quality of life, and
helped them do the things that are important to them and
helped them do the things that are important to them to be part
of their community.
Nominations can be made in various formats and NDS can
assist in developing nominations if needed.
Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Saturday 28
March 2015 at Crown Perth. People with disability nominating
their support people are encouraged to attend the gala dinner
and can talk to us can about possible funding to cover costs to
attend.
Information is available on www.dswa.org.au or by contacting

Milestone for the Community Living and
Participation Grants Program
National Disability Services (NDS) WA recently received a
$500,000 for the Community Living and Participation Grants
(CLPG) program, presented by the Hon. Helen Morton MLC,
Minister for Disability Services.
The Lotterywest program provides West Australians with
disability grants to participate in social and recreational
activities and to improve their quality of life and that of their
families.
At the event, West Rise basketball player Mr Shannon
McKinley and his coach Ms Chris Saligari share their story of
how the program helped them establish 11 teams of people
with intellectual disability.
For more information about how to apply for a grant, please
visit www.clpg.org.au
Affiliates List – October 2014
Over the past year, a number of fantastic business and
organisations have joined the WA Companion Card program.
New affiliates are joining the program every week and we
recommend you visit www.wa.companioncard.asn.au or
www.facebook.com/CompanionCardWA to keep up to date or
you can contact us to request a list be sent to you.
If there is a venue or activity that you wish to attend, it is your
responsibility to check with the venue or ticketing outlet, at the
time of booking your tickets as to whether they accept your
Companion Card. Many venues may still accept your
Companion Card even if they are not formally registered to the
program and listed below, so check each time!
