April NEWSLETTER Change for children campaign Beginning on March 30th we will begin our Change for Children Campaign for the Children in Crisis Program. We would like for all students to bring any change that their family might have at home to donate to Children in Crisis during the months of March 30th – May 1st. We will have Quarter for Hat day on April 30th. All students that bring a quarter before or on that day will get to wear a hat on that day. Administration Update The parent survey (English and Spanish versions) has been opened on the District Website since Monday, November 10th. It will continue to be open until May, 2015. We encourage our parents to visit the website and complete the survey. This provides valuable information that helps us to plan for improvements that supports your child’s learning. We would like to remind you of the testing that is taking place this month. Please review the dates for your child’s assessment dates and times listed below. Help us to prepare your child for the best possible results to these assessments. Proper sleep time and a nutritious breakfast will help your child perform to their best potential. No volunteers will be allowed on the campus during testing times. Reminder Our April Early Release is on Thursday, April 2nd. Please remember to make transportation and supervision arrangements for your children. We will be releasing students at 12:50. Jump Rope For Heart: Congratulations to Ryann Wilson in fifth grade who raised $1600.00 for our Jump Rope for Heart. The Jump Rope for Heart will recognize Ryann with a lunch of her choice and a plague. We appreciate all the hard work of all the students that raised money for this good cause. We had a total of over $4000.00. Future Chefs Elementary Culinary Competition: Sodexo and the OCSD Food Service Department held a “Healthy Snack” contest for the OCSD. Florosa Elementary School’s Austin Anderson was a Finalist in this year’s Future Chefs Elementary Culinary Competition! Mr. Woody assisted Austin in his creation “Peanut Butter Apple Wrap” for the competition. The final competition was held on Thursday, March 5th, at the Ruckel Middle School Cafeteria at 6:00pm, at which time each contestant prepared and presented their submitted “Healthy Snack” recipe to an invited panel of judges. Cox Hero: Emily Quiroz is our Cox Hero for School Year 2014-2015. She is the daughter of Ms. Ruth Ramirez and Mr. Oscar Quiroz. The annual Inspirational Student Hero Recognition Awards is sponsored by Cox Communications. Through this program Cox recognizes inspirational students who have shown great fortitude by successfully adapting to and/or conquering personal problems, challenges or situations. Emily enrolled in school in late September 2014. She came to Florosa from Mexico and did not speak any English. She quickly adjusted to her new life at school and is rapidly learning English. She is very pleasant and never complains. She has developed many new friendships. She is eager to learn and works very hard. Florosa’s Book Fair Thank you to all of the parents that supported our Book Fair. We had good attendance on Family Night and a nice participation for the Book and Breakfast event. We hope that all that attended these events enjoyed them and found them beneficial. Ms. Howell’s Fabulous FAB group read the book How to Eat Fried Worms about some boys that make a bet to eat one worm every day for fifteen days. The group celebrated at the end of the story by eating gummy worms. From deputy schill Congratulations to our newest Safety Patrol members. These students were promoted from the JDLP program and will be a few of our Safety Patrol for the 2015-2016 year: Mason Svitenko Rydder Hentze Bradley McDonald Azaria Lincoln Samantha Payne Respectfully, Samantha Schill KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2015-2016 Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2015, are asked to register their children for 2015-2016 kindergarten during the period of March 2-20 and March 30–April 3. School staff may not be working March 23-27 due to Spring Break. Florida law provides that any child who will be 5 on or before September 1 st is eligible for kindergarten that school year. It is extremely important that new kindergarten students be registered beginning March 2 for the fall (August) school opening. Classes will be formed, teachers assigned, and materials ordered on the basis of student enrollment. Registration for kindergarten may be completed at any time during the regular school day at the school zoned for the child’s neighborhood. To complete the registration process, parents must present proof of the child’s age (birth certificate), a Florida certificate of immunization, a social security card, and a school physical dated no later than twelve months prior to the first day of school. SUMMER VPK REGISTRATION FOR 2015 Parents who wish to register their children for the Summer VPK Program are also requested to enroll their child at this time. Florida law provides that any child who turned 5 on or before September 1, 2015 and is eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2015-2016 school year and did not attend VPK during the current 2014-2015 school year is eligible to attend Summer VPK. For Summer VPK enrollment, parents must provide proof of Florida residency in addition to the registration items listed above. To register for Summer VPK, a certificate of eligibility must be obtained from the Early Learning Coalition at 107 Tupelo Avenue, FWB: Phone number 850-833-9330, or the Early Learning Coalition at 10 S. 4th Street, DeFuniak Springs: Phone number 850-892-8560. Summer VPK sites will be Southside Center (Crestview area), and Edwins Elementary, in the South area, enrollment permitting. Parent transportation must be provided for Summer VPK students.
