2/8/2015 Eric Wiggins Living in the overflow “God is going to turn it around” Joel 2:12-32 There are times in our walk with The Lord that we experience public and personal difficulty. We are experience hard times in seemingly every area of our life and community. The Prophet Joel encourages us to utilize our personal devotion to change public difficulty. When we turn our hearts toward The Lord God He will turn our situation completely around! Definition of Biblical fasting – “refraining from food for a spiritual purpose” 2 Samuel 12:16-23, Isaiah 58:1-14, Matt.4:2, Luke 2:37, Acts 13:2, 14:23 I. The public devastation a. We are exposed to progressive devastation (Joel 1:4) i. Chewing locust – trouble that eats at us ii. Swarming locust – trouble that surrounds us iii. Crawling locust - trouble at every step and turn iv. Consuming locust – trouble that overwhelms us b. We are exposed to personal devastation i. Consumers are devastated – Wine drinkers (Joel 1:5-10) ii. Producers are devastated – Farmers (Joel 1:11-12) iii. Worshippers are devastated – Ministers/priest (Joel 1:13-16) 1. No prosperity in the house of God (v. 13) 2. No provisions in the house of God (v. 16) 3. No praise in the house of God (v. 16) c. We experience the picture of devastation i. A cloudy forecast (Joel 2:2) ii. A consuming fire (Joel 2:3) iii. A collection of fierce fighters (Joel 2:4-11) 1. Look like horses 2. Sound like chariots 2/8/2015 Eric Wiggins 3. Run like mighty men 4. Climb like men of war 5. Enter like thieves II. Our private Devotions a. Repent to the Lord God i. We are to consider our ways (Joel 2:12-14) 1. Turn our hearts 2. Tear our hearts 3. Trust in Him (His Grace, Mercy, Love, Kindness, Blessing) ii. We are called to worship (Joel 2:15-17) 1. Consecrate a fast 2. Call a community fellowship (Elders, Children, Men/Women, Husbands/Wives, Ministers) b. Response from the Lord God i. The Lord will replenish our supply (Joel 2:18-19) 1. He will supply Grain 2. He will supply New Wine 3. He will supply Oil ii. The Lord will remove our enemies (Joel 2:20) 1. He will deal with our enemies 2. He will destroy our enemies iii. The Lord will rain on our seed (Joel 2:21-24) 1. Former and latter rain will fall 2. The threshing floor will be full 3. The wine vats will be flowing 2/8/2015 Eric Wiggins iv. The Lord will restore our situation (Joel 2:25-27) 1. He will restore our seasons 2. He will restore our satisfaction 3. He will restore our shout v. The Lord will release His Spirit (Joel 2: 28-32) 1. He will pour out His Spirit 2. He will provide His salvation Growing Deeper in the Word – Weekly Study God will turn it around! Joel 2:12-32 1. Take a moment and describe a time when you experienced a season of trouble or devastation that seemed to get progressively worse over time 2. Think about a time when either you or someone you are connected to went through a really tough time. Consider and name all the people who were affected by that situation. Consider a time when our community went through a really tough time and think about how many people are affected. 3. The word tells us to turn our public devastation around through our personal devotion. Joel tells us to “tear our hearts and not our garments. He tells us to repent and return to the Lord”. What is The Lord God calling you to repent of in this season of Fasting and prayer? 6. Write out a detailed prayer list of the items you want the Lord God to replenish, the enemies you want Him to remove, the blessing you want Him to send, the situations you want Him to restore and the blessing you want Him to release? Be specific. Make this a part of your prayer list for the 40 day Fresh Fire prayer and fasting experience.
