14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
As a psychologist in the Department of Psychology at Hawthorn Center, the following major duties are performed:
psychotherapy (e.g., individual, group, and family therapy) for children, adolescents, and their families; conducting
psychological evaluations on children and adolescents; and developing behavioral plans on referred patients.

 Provide individual and group therapy for long-term inpatient children and adolescents utilizing scientifically based treatment
methods, including, but not limited to, cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavioral, dynamic, supportive, and/or crisis
intervention.
 Provide family therapy to long-term children and adolescents and their families.
 Attend daily rounds, team meetings, and treatment planning/progress conferences as scheduled.
 Complete all pertinent documentation.

 Administer, score, and interpret intellectual, academic, motoric, rating scales, vocational inventories, and personality tests for
children and adolescents.
 Conduct clinical interviews with children and adolescents to assess mental status.
 For new admissions, complete Psychology Admission Assessment sheet in the Admission Assessment Packet.
 For psychological consultations, perform mental status, psychological testing, record review, and complete comprehensive
Psychological Consultation Report.
 Provide feedback to parents, teachers, and milieu staff
 Complete reports on a timely basis.

Limited licensed psychologists require supervision by a fully licensed psychologist, who is part of the Medical Staff and is
privileged to provide such services. The living area psychiatrist provides general therapy supervision.

Decisions impacting departmental or hospital policies, procedures, personnel issues, or major issues regarding patient care
should be reviewed by the Director of Psychology or designated supervisor.
18. What kind of physical effort do you use in your position? What environmental conditions are you physically exposed to in your

The position does not require strenuous physical activity.

23. What are the essential duties of this position?
To provide psychological evaluations for children and adolescents, which may include intellectual, academic, motoric,
adaptive behavior, vocational, and personality tests; psychotherapeutic services to children, adolescents, and their families;
and write behavioral and reward based programs.
24. Indicate specifically how the position’s duties and responsibilities have changed since the position was last reviewed.
Duties have remained essentially the same.
25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function?
The function of the Department of Psychology is to provide psychological evaluations; psychotherapy services (including
individual, group, and family therapy); and develop behavioral plans. Each staff psychologist is assigned to a
child/adolescent living area to carry out these duties.

26. In your opinion, what are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this
position.
EDUCATION:
Prefer= Doctoral degree from an accredited program in the field of Psychology, with a child clinical specialization.
Minimum Requirement= Master’s Degree from an accredited program in the field of Psychology with academic courses and
practicums/internships in child psychology.
Prefer=Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA, BCBA-D).
EXPERIENCE:
Prefer= Child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient experience as a clinical psychologist, with at least two years of full time
clinical experience working with children and adolescents.
Minimum= Two years of full time experience working as a psychologist with emotionally disturbed children and
adolescents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of child clinical psychology.
Skills and abilities to assess children/adolescents; perform psychotherapy with children/adolescents; interview/observe
children and families; and develop behavior management plans.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to develop rapport with children/adolescents and parents, and works with teams.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Minimum= Limited Licensed Psychologist, State of Michigan
Prefer= Fully Licensed Psychologist, State of Michigan
