Mythology Unit Newspaper Project
Create a newspaper covering five of the events we have been read about in D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek
Myths.
Content Requirements:

NEWSPAPER TITLE/MASTHEAD: Include a title and date of publication for the
newspaper. Keep in mind that most newspaper titles include a city or state along with a
title (e.g., The St. Louis Post-Dispatch or The New York Times). Be creative!

MAJOR NEWS STORY: Include one “news story” that summarizes the events of one myth of
your choice. This news story must include a “lead” with a strong action verb, at least one
quote, and should be written according to the instructions presented in class.

FOUR OTHER NEWSPAPER ELEMENTS: Include at least four other types of newspaper
content based on mythological events covered in class:
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
other news stories
editorials/opinion pieces
political cartoons
sports story
advice column
arts and entertainment
lifestyle articles
o

o

announcements
obituaries
advertisements
classified ad
comics
weather

JOURNALISTIC STYLE: Any news story must include a headline, a byline, dateline, and lead
as well as inverted pyramid style. You may also use photos or illustrations with captions.

CREATIVITY: You may be serious or have some fun with it, but make sure that your
newspaper shows that you are familiar with the myths and understand the material. (Real
news stories do not typically have a lot of creativity, but you have freedom to be creative
and imaginative in how you bring the myths to life in the newspaper.)
Presentation of Your Newspaper:

MATERIALS: You may write the stories by hand or type them, cut them out, and glue them
on a large piece of paper. You may also use one of the Word templates provided on the
homework website. (They are listed under “Templates for Newspaper Project”.) It will
provide a layout and design for you to fill in with your content and then print out. If we
discover a way to access this on the Chromebooks, you may also do it on Google Drive

FORMAT: Use a real newspaper style with columns, headlines, bylines, and datelines.

LENGTH: You must have at least one front page of a newspaper, but you may have as many
pages as you like.

VISUAL PRESENTATION: Make it as visually appealing as possible.
