USING CLICKER AND SOLO 6 TO MAKE What is Clicker? Clicker is a word processing tool which is used for struggling writers. It has a basic word processor in addition to Clicker Sets which uses words, phrases, and pictures. The program also has text to speech features which allows the child to hear what they are typing. The program can be adapted to fit activities and child’s needs. Making the Common Core State Standards Accessible Through Clicker and Solo 6 Software COMMON CORE ACCESSIBLE What Is SOLO 6? SOLO 6 consists of a variety of programs which include a text reader, graphic organizer, word processor, and word prediction. Read out Loud is the text reader which can electronically read online text. Draft Builder is used for outlining and drafting. Write Out Loud is a talking word processor which allows the student to hear what they are typing. Co Writer is the word prediction software that can be used in Write Out Loud, Draft Builder, or any other word processor. Success of Student using Assistive Technology S- Student and Characteristics Isabella is an eight year old 3rd grade student who has auditory processing disorder and learning disabilities. She is in an integrated co-teaching classroom and also receives one on one teaching assistance. She is currently reading at a level H text but enjoys reading and listening to more complex stories. She also enjoys writing and sharing her ideas but her hand writing is difficult for others to read and she becomes frustrated by spelling out words. These Assistive Technologies can enrich a student’s life in many ways. With regards to reading the electronically read texts can help them to access grade level materials. Read Out Loud will read electronic text to the student. This helps make common core curriculum accessible that otherwise wouldn’t be. E- Environment/Background • • • She is a 3rd grade student who has a one on one aide throughout her school day. She offers her a lot of support and with writing and reading will often do the activities for her. She does not use any assistive technology. If a reading passage is too difficult her one on one aide will read it to her. Similarly, if the writing is too difficult her one on one aide will scribe for her. Isabella was a hesitant reader and writer because they were difficult for her. She wasn’t able to access Common Core curriculum without one on one teaching support. Through the use of Clicker and SOLO 6 and minimal support she was able to read and write using grade level materials. She enjoyed using the technologies and was more engaged. Below are pictures which show the success she achieved by using these technologies. Before writing with Clicker and SOLO 6 She will be given a computer with clicker and SOLO 6 software to help her to be more independent. T- Tasks/Objectives Clicker and SOLO 6 can be used to assist a student in their writing. SOLO 6 has Co Writer which is a word prediction software which assists students in spelling more independently. Clicker and Clicker Sets can be used with programming to allow the student to also be more independent. They can reach the common core writing goals with the support of these softwares. • • Make curriculum more accessible to Isabella through the use of assistive technology in order to be more independent in her learning. Be able to do grade level reading and writing activities with more independence. Using ReadOutLoud she was able to control the computer at her own pace to read grade level texts. She used CoWriter and Clicker to write without needing a scribe or to ask how to spell most words. T- Tools/Description of Assistive Technologies • • • Clicker 6 is a writing tool which was used to help Isabella type and hear what she was writing. Co Writer which has word prediction capabilities was used in conjunction with Clicker 6 to produce writing pieces. Read Out Loud is a talking word processor which allowed her to access grade level texts independently. After writing with Clicker and SOLO 6
