2014 in review
St. Norbert School has had a very exciting and eventful 2014 in all areas of our school. Our 8th grade
class was particularly busy. They continued with their annual visit to volunteer at Hilda’s Place, a soup
kitchen in Evanston. This year, our faculty also volunteered at Hilda’s Place as part of their faculty
service project. The 8th graders also volunteered by visiting and spending time with the retired Priests
from Techny. Continuing their active year, they took a trip to Washington, DC for their class trip, and as
a group won the Northbrook Tower pumpkin decorating contest in the “Most Creative” category. Their
class play for 2014 was The Last Half Hour.
In 2014 St. Norbert School continued to expand our diverse group of electives to include Lego Robotics
and a fashion and painting class. This is in addition to Latin, Debate, Guitar, Digital Photography,
programming and many others. Also added in 2014 was a new technology lab. We were also proud to
send almost 50% of our seventh graders to University of Illinois in Champaign as science fair finalists.
In basketball, our St. Norbert School Varsity Boys basketball team defeated St. Joseph’s of Wilmette 4342 in a thrilling overtime game at Loyola Academy in Wilmette on February 27th to win the Council II 3A
Ignatius Division Championship. Trailing the entire game, the Crusaders tied the game 35-35 with 6
seconds left in regulation to force overtime when Bryan Ruz stole the inbound pass after a timeout and
fed Wesley Bascon-O’Connell for the tying score. Will Schrader then sank the game winning 3-point
basket with 8 seconds left in overtime to secure the victory for St. Norbert.
2014 was the 2nd year of our Crusader Team Challenge. This is our annual school fundraiser and athletic
event. This fun family event engaged all of our students and parents in field games and other activities
while raising funds for our Home & School Association as well as our Athletic Committee. Our K-8
students were on teams with students from other grades for mixed competition, and team and
individual awards were presented. Various team competitions took place with participation from both
students and parents, and activities were followed by a dinner for all St. Norbert School families.
Continuing in 2014 was our exciting Roundball Basketball Tournament. This is our annual student
tournament with mixed aged teams coached by school alumni. The event is kicked off with a faculty
game.
Our 1st graders cared for and hatched chickens in 2014! A webcam was set up so students and faculty
could track the eggs 24/7. The farm that took in the chicks are returning to us farm fresh eggs.
On June 1, 2014, St. Norbert School held its 2014 Graduation Mass and Ceremony honoring this year's
graduates. We wish them all the best of luck as they continue on to several local high schools including
Glenbrook North High School, Loyola Academy, Notre Dame High School and Wheeling High School.
2014 also saw the official launch of our St. Norbert School Alumni Association and Website.
(stnorbertschoolalumni.org) St. Norbert School has a long and rich history, and our alumni are an
integral part of the school. Our new website is a great tool to connect to our history and to experience
the richness of our school today. The association will also help with coordinating reunions at the school
and special alumni masses.
Finally, our Christmas pageant, No Room for Christmas, was performed in the gymnasium. The
performance was a blend of traditional and modern which emphasized the importance of faith and the
birth of Jesus as being the most important aspect of our busy holiday season.
St. Norbert School has truly had an outstanding and very blessed year, and we are looking forward to
the new year!
