CURRENT POSITION

Senior Lecturer (full-time) in the Division of Nursing & Midwifery, School of Health and Rehabilitation
Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town.

Full responsibility for designing, convening and teaching of 3 semester modules and 2 half courses
including all clinical teaching, clinical accompaniment, supervision and evaluation of students
undertaking the Critical Care Nursing (General) Pathway.

This requires liaising with all external lecturers and convenors, administration of marks, fieldwork,
external examiners etc.

Designing a Clinical Masters Degree for Critical Care Nursing (Generic).

Part of the Nursing Academic team in re-structuring the ‘new’ Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing

Cross disciplinary teaching within the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences for Speech and
Communication Sciences Disorders, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition & Dietetics.

At Faculty/School level, responsibilities include co-ordinating input from 6 professions in the
Department for the Clinical Skills Centre.

Directorate representative for Student Support and Continuing Professional Development.

Teaching of 3rd year medical and physiotherapy students, basic life support at the Clinical Skills Centre
and evaluation of medical students in semesters 3 & 4, Becoming a Doctor. This also includes Cuban
medical students.

External Examiner for the Western Cape College of Nursing for Fundamentals of Nursing Science I
(Diploma for registration as a Nurse [General, Psychiatric & Community] and Midwife. Secundus for
Senate re: examinations, curriculum and student matters.

External Examiner University of Stellenbosch Postgraduate and Honours Diploma in Critical Care
Nursing.
RECOGNITION FROM PEERS

Awarded the Avis Campbell Trophy for the Highest Academic Aggregate and Best Practical Nurse over 3
years 1982.

Awarded Honours for final examination for the Diploma in Intensive Nursing Science 1990.

Co-awarded Bristol-Myers Squibb Award in 1993 for a nursing paper entitled “Can ICU Nurses adapt to
changes in the ‘90’s?”

Awarded 1st prize for a poster competition 1994 at Groote Schuur Hospital on cost containment.

Awarded the Adcock Ingram Critical Care Award 1994 for the best free paper by a nursing member
entitled “Critical Care is Costly Care”.

Received merit award from the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape 1996 for recognition of
dedicated service.

Nominated in the same year for special merit award for cost containment.

Awarded the Bristol-Myers Squibb Award 1997 for 2 nursing papers entitled “Pain management in the
ICU ~ something old, something new”, and “Candiduria, a budding dilemma for mouldy Intensivists.”

Class Medal for distinction in Nursing Dynamics [Practical teaching] (Advanced University Diploma in
Nursing Education) 1998.

“Practical inotrope use in ICU” and “Reconnecting with Central Venous Lines.” The Combined Congress of
The South African Thoracic Society, The Critical Care Society of Southern Africa and The Allergy Society
of South Africa, Cape Town August 2003.

Received The Critical Care Society of Southern Africa Presidential Award for Nursing Excellence and
contributions to Critical Care, August 2003.

Invited to speak at Copicon 2005 Sun City, The Combined Congress of the South African Thoracic
Society and the Critical Society of Southern African on Masters Thesis, “Nurses lived experiences in caring
for long-term mechanically ventilated patients in Intensive Care Units.”

Nominated by the University of Cape Town for a ‘5 Star Staff Award’ for commitment to students’
academic teaching and learning and support November 2005.

Opened the UCT/Critical Care Society of Southern Africa 2005 Refresher Course, Cape Town, Nursing
session with a paper entitled “The Future of Critical Care Nursing in South Africa”. Also presented a paper
entitled “The Dreaded Pulmonary Artery Catheter.”

Invited to Jönköping University (Sweden) to teach Critical Care Nursing and collaborate a research and
student/lecturer exchange programme for 2005 and again in 2006.

CCSSA Refresher Course University Witswatersrand 2006 presented 2 papers entitled “The Last Hours of
Living” and “Prone positioning in Critical Care Nursing.”

Participated in data collection 2006 for a research project entitled “Organisation and Staffing of Critical
Care Services within the Western Cape” under the auspices of The Critical Care Society of Southern
Africa. Will be accredited with co-authorship on publication.

Participated in a study “A Profile of Postgraduate Critical Care Nursing Research” conducted by the Dept
of Anaesthesiology, University of the Witwatersrand 2006. This entailed data collection from the 2
universities that have Critical Care Nursing programmes.

Presented a paper entitled “International Collaboration. The UCT and Jönköping Experience”.
FUNDISA Annual Conference. UCT Graduate School of Business, Cape Town 2007.

Awarded the Medi-Clinic Nursing Award 2007 (R5000.00) for best presentation at the Annual Academic
Research evening run by the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa; Cape Western Branch for a
research study entitled “An investigation into Nurses’ perceptions of noise in a Coronary Care Unit and a
Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital.”

The Combined Congress of the South African Thoracic Society and the Critical Society of Southern
African, Sun City 2007 - “An investigation into Nurses’ perceptions of noise in a Coronary Care Unit and a
Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital” and “Prone ventilation: an art and a science.”

CCSSA Refresher Course, Port Elizabeth in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
2007 presented 2 papers entitled “Are Critical Care Nurses’ touchy feely?” and “Soon it will be our turn –
the elderly in ICU”.


Runs an in-service programme for UCT Academic Private Hospital.

Continues to work within a small team of Nurse Educators countrywide in writing up clinical guidelines
for Critical Care Nursing and addressing Critical Care Nursing Education.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Elected onto the Executive Council of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa in 2003 to address
education and training of Critical Care Nurses (only nurse in a predominately male/medical milieu).

Invited by the South African Qualifications Authority and the National Qualifications Framework to
work with the Standards Generating Body for writing standards for Critical Care Nursing (General).

Served in office as Chairman of the Critical Care Society Cape Western Branch 2003.

On task team working on guidelines for Intensive Care in South Africa with the South African Society of
Anaesthesiologists.

School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences 2006.

