Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships
National Football Museum Research Consortium
The National Football Museum Research Consortium is offering up to three new research
studentships a year to study for a PhD with the members of the Consortium and a UK University,
funded through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Collaborative Doctoral Partnership
scheme.
The Consortium is made up of the following: National Football Museum; World Rugby Museum;
National Hockey Museum; National Horseracing Museum; River and Rowing Museum; Rugby League
Cares (planning the Rugby League Museum); and the MCC Cricket Museum.
Since 2005 members of the Consortium have worked with UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on
AHRC funded collaborative doctorates, working on a wide range of projects. As part of the AHRC
Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) consortium, we are able to directly select a number of PhD
studentships per year for support. Each of these studentships is jointly supervised by a specialist
Consortium staff member and an academic from a UK HEI. The HEI administers the studentship,
receiving funds from the AHRC for fees and to cover the student’s maintenance. The Consortium
members will also provide additional financial support to the student towards their travel and
related costs in carrying out research (up to £1,000 p.a.).
Further details on the CDP and CDA schemes are available from the AHRC and CDP Consortium
websites.
2015 Call for Applications Now Open
The deadline for applications for studentships to start in October 2016 is 27 November 2015.
The projects must fulfil our aim to unlock the unique sporting heritage in our collections, which are
of national and international significance. Within this we aim to focus on those histories which have
been least considered by academics and others, particularly the still largely ‘hidden’ histories of
women and ethnic minorities in sport, as well as issues of social class, disability and sexuality. We
wish to focus on this because there is a public perception that sport is ‘white’ and ‘male’. Women’s
sport in particular is still marginalized by the media, and undervalued.
We are looking for projects on cricket, rowing, and football at three members of the Consortium in
the first round, namely:
MCC Cricket Museum, Lord’s.

Application forms are available from the above, or from:

Studentship projects should be jointly proposed by the member of the Consortium staff and a
colleague from a UK HEI. We can accept CDP applications on any topic provided that the proposed
project is of high quality, is appropriate for collaborative study at doctoral level, and is relevant to
both the AHRC subject areas and the Consortium’s priorities.
Completed forms must be submitted to sarah.trinder@nationalfootballmuseum.com by 27
November 2015 in order to be considered.
