Fall 2012 Weston Youth Services WOW! After-School Programs Hurlbutt Students (HES) Grades K thru 2 Weston’s One World After-School Programs Weston Youth Services is pleased to offer its WOW! After-School programs for students in Kindergarten through Second Grade at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first -served basis. Enrollment is limited in order to keep class size small. Please register your child only if he/she has a genuine interest. Registration/Payment: Online registration will open on Tuesday, September 4th at 12:01 a.m. If a program is full, you still may register and your child's name will automatically be placed on the waitlist (payment is not required at this time). If space becomes available you will be notified. You have several options to pay: 1. Pay online at the time of registration via Mastercard or Visa, 2. Drop off a check (payable to The Town of Weston) in the WOW Mailboxes located in Main Office at Hurlbutt or WIS, or 3. Drop off a check (payable to The Town of Weston) at the Youth Services Office/Town Hall Annex (located in the portables next to the BOE Central Office). 4. Please Note: If payment is not received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8th, your registration for the program(s) will be automatically canceled. Fee: See each course listing. ALL materials are included in the fees shown. Financial Aid is available. Refund Policy: Once a class starts, we cannot issue refunds or credits. Program Dates: Classes begin the week of Sept. 17th and run thru the week of Dec. 10th (unless noted). Please mark class dates on your calendar. Time: All classes are scheduled from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm (unless noted). Please pick up your child in the classroom promptly at 4:15 p.m.! Please understand that our instructors have commitments after class. Important Notes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Please be sure to follow the alternate dismissal manager program each week when your child is doing his/her WOW! class(es). In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or any other school emergency, all after-school programs will be cancelled and the children will be sent home per school policy. Cancellations will be announced on our website and an email will be sent out. If a class is cancelled at the last minute on the day it was to be held and we are unable to contact you, children will stay in the main office with the WOW! Supervisor until you arrive. We will make every effort to make up missed classes due to last minute cancellations. There is no nurse on duty after normal school hours. In the event of illness or emergency treatment, we will call 911 and then contact parents, followed by the emergency contact, if necessary. If your child has any special medical needs, please contact Charlene Monn prior to the start of the session. Children may bring a small peanut/nut-free snack to be eaten before the program begins. Children will be asked to wash hands before the program starts. Weston Youth Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to lack of student enrollment. If a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or withdraws from the school or the program, the student forfeits the entire program fee. Monday Programs 11 -week session Sept. 24th - Dec. 10th (no class Oct. 8th) Model Building with Mr. Bartley (1st & 2nd grade) Maximum # of participants: 12 students Fee: $ 187.00 Location: East House Cafeteria We are very excited to have Adam Bartley return to Hurlbutt this fall, where students will have lots of fun learning basic model building skills. Students will build several different types of wood models that they will assemble, paint, and take home. At the same time, they will learn a little background on the models they are creating. This is a very popular class, so please register early! Instructor: Adam Bartley is an alumnus of Weston High School and has been involved with the Weston Volunteer Fire Dept for many years. Many students know Adam when he assisted the Hurlbutt students during their lunch period two years ago or as an aide last year at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Adam enjoys building model plans and remote controlled gadgets and looks forward to returning this exciting program again. Little Scientist (K-2nd grade) Maximum # of participants: 10 students Fee: 187.00 Location: Art Room Calling all girls and boys! Come join Little Scientist and enjoy scientific discovery with hands-on experiments! Find out why the Sky is Blue, how to make GOOP and if oranges float. Additional topics that will be covered during the session include Volcanos, Dinosaurs, Static Electricity and much more. This very popular class is designed for K's, 1st and 2nd graders and has been running continuously at Weston's Hurlbutt School for 15 years. Students work together as a group and independently to create their science project to take home . Instructor: Jeanne Piro is a trained instructor of the Little Scientist program. Jean has experience as an art instructor, culinary trained chef, swim instructor, and is a certified Ha!Ha! (Humor therapy program Clown.) Paint, Draw & More (K thru 2nd grade) Maximum Number of participants: 12 students Fee: $ 198.00 Location: South House # 44 Paint, Draw & More! teaches younger children to draw what they see, to enhance their drawings with their own ideas and concepts, and to use different materials in creative ways. The class environment is non-competitive, nurturing, and fun. This program helps children to build their self-esteem through their drawing success and enhances hand eye coordination as well as spatial and color relationships. We will use pencils, pastels, charcoals, and paints to discover sketching and drawing, develop technique, and strengthen drawing fundamentals. Instructor: Jo-Ann Thompson-Claybourne attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and has 37 years’ experience in sketching, drawing, painting, and collages. She creates new and exciting pieces using different mediums to capture the vision she sees while creating each piece. Jo-Ann has shown her works throughout Connecticut and New York. Kids Yoga (1st & 2nd grade) Maximum # of participants: 10 students Fee: $ 174.00 Location: South House All Purpose Room New this fall, Michelle Mecca takes a fun, creative approach to yoga that can be very helpful for children whose bodies are still developing. The use of animated poses and basic stretching exercises promote strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques teach children how to focus, relax and develop self-control. It can improve concentration and focus, stimulate their imagination and help to release energy in a fun, safe environment. Instructor: Michelle Mecca is a certified Yoga Instructor and owner of Strength & Serenity. She is very excited to bring this program to Hurlbutt this fall as she encourages children to explore and discover the mind and body in a fun-filled way! Children whose social skills are polished and natural will shine no matter where they are. The twelve-week session will cover greetings, phone manners, table manners, and end with a pizza party! Offered for students in Grades K-2, Weston’s own Master Magician, Nisan Eventoff returns to Hurlbutt this fall to teach students the secrets of the professional magician! Come and experience the wonders of magic! This class provides an interactive experience where students will learn the “classics” of magic. Students will learn presentation skills, leadership skills, speaking skills, confidence, poise, and tips for selfimprovement. This program is wonderful, interesting, and fun-filled. Each week you will receive magic tricks and materials to take home with you. Any students repeating this class will receive new tricks to take home and will assist as magic assistants for new students. All materials will be provided. A truly magical experience awaits you! Instructor: Nisan Eventoff is an internationally known magician who has appeared in movies, T.V. and theatre. He is a life member of the prestigious “Magic Castle” in Los Angeles. Do you like to work with clay and make clay projects in art class? Do you like shaping squishy clay to create whatever you like? Then join us and explore your creativity further! This course will offer students a chance to learn about clay, as well as create and sculpt with it. Projects may include making sculpted animals, several types of pots, dinosaurs, vessels, portraits, leaf prints, and more. The Clay Place in Norwalk will provide materials, storage space, and firing for our sculptures. Instructor: Meg Murphy teaches clay studies to children at The Clay Place in Norwalk. She attended Silvermine School of the Arts where she studied fundamentals of design, drawing, ceramics and metal sculptures. She is also an accomplished stain glass designer as well as a landscape designer. We are very happy to have Meg return this fall to Hurlbutt! Wednesday Programs 9-week session*(unless indicated) Sept. 19th-Dec. 5th (no class Sept. 26th, Nov. 7th* and Nov. 21st ) Kindergarten Crafts (K only) A Program Designed for Kindergartners Maximum # of participants: 10 students Fee: $ 144.00 Location: South House # 40 This 9-week class for kindergartners will be using the season to influence their crafts and projects. Among the projects will be bird feeders made from recycled items, pinecone picture frames, and holiday centerpieces. Students may also learn how to make apple cider and stamp note cards. Come join us as we celebrate the fall. Instructor: Cathy Klein had been a long time Weston resident and has worked at Hurlbutt Elementary School for ten years as a kindergarten aide. She also teaches cooking in our Summer Creative Arts/Enrichment camp and ran the kindergarten sports and fitness program through Weston Parks and Recreation. Cathy returns to Kindergarten Crafts this fall for its fourth year. She is very excited to offer this program to kindergartners! Photography Workshop (2nd grade only) Maximum # of participants: 10 students Fee: $189.00 Location: South House #48 The focus of this course, offered to 2nd grade students, is to introduce students to the fun and skills of photography. Participants will be exposed to basics of photography (composition, working with existing light and using flash) and with various subjects: people, scenery, animals, still life, etc. All students will be lent a 35mm camera with flash. Print film will be used for indoor and outdoor activities. The fee covers the cost of film and processing. Students will have the chance to showcase their photography during the summer at the Weston Public Library. Students will also have an opportunity to view and discuss the works of well-known photographers such as Ansel Adams. Students are permitted to bring their own 35 mm cameras from home. Please let us know if you have your own camera to bring. Instructor: Wilma Donaldson is a retired teacher from Hurlbutt, but she just can’t stay away! Her love for photography and teaching keeps her coming back. Mrs. Donaldson proudly displays the works of her students every summer in the Weston Public Library. How lucky we are to have her return this year! Art with Ms. Liz (1st and 2nd grade) Maximum # of participants: 10 students Fee: $144.00 Location: South House # 44 Explore your creativity with various media! Ms. Liz will encourage fun and spontaneity while inspiring students to challenge themselves! Students will feel the energy of their work and challenge their imagination! The emphasis of this program is on experimenting with different mediums, opening your eyes, respecting others, and appreciating the wonders of creativity. Instructor: Liz Ward has been part of the Hurlbutt Kindergarten team for ten years. She has taught art in our Summer Creative/Arts Enrichment camp, Inspirational Yoga and Art camp, and taught K-WOW! for many years in our after-school WOW! programs at Hurlbutt Elementary School. After-School programs this fall! This NON-competitive, core-strengthening exercise is good for beginners, intermediates, and advanced students. The focus will be on helping students to understand and use martial arts to develop self- discipline, self- control, confidence, focus, and respect for others in a fun and safe environment. Included in the fee ($169.00), each student will receive a white GI (uniform). Please specify weight and height on registration form. If your child has their own uniform, there will be a price adjustment ($144.00). Note: Students may be invited to test for an advanced belt pending successful completion of learned techniques. Parents will be notified directly by Georgetown Martial Arts. Please know that there is an additional cost for the test, payable to Georgetown Martial Arts, and is not part of the WOW! fee. Instructor: Richard Dandanell’s expertise and ability to impart his knowledge of Tai Chi and Chi Gong are exceptional. He has taught martial arts throughout Connecticut for over 15 years and trained at The American Center for Chinese Studies as well as The Hall of the Dragon and Tiger in New York. Richard has studied a variety of styles and brings the depth of his experience to our program. Thursday Programs 12-week session th Sept. 20 –Dec. 13th (no class Nov. 22nd) The WOW! Singers: (K-2nd grade) Maximum # of participants: 20 students Fee: $ 174.00 Location: South House # 47 Performance scheduled on December 13th Introduced last January, we are so happy to bring The WOW! Singers back this fall! Mrs. Jane Jessep, former music teacher at Hurlbutt for 20 years, will work with interested young singers. We will talk about how to make different kinds of vocal sounds, how to sing expressively and how to create your own songs. Simple unison songs will be used and a variety of rounds and 2 part songs as well. It will be loads of fun! An absolute charming program! Instructor: Jane Jessep was Hurlbutt's music teacher for 20 years. During her time there she created the Mother's Day concert and had a 3rd and 4th grade chorus that hundreds of students joined over the years. Students did composing workshops and choreography workshops with Mrs. Jessep as well. She is excited to return to Hurlbutt to work with young singers again. Crafts for Kids (1st & 2nd grade) Maximum # of Participants: 10 students Fee: $ 270.00 Location: East House # 35 Special Note: Program runs from 3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Crafts by Kids returns to Hurlbutt Elementary School this fall with all new projects. In Crafts by Kids, students may use a variety of craft-making materials including paper, clay, paint, decoupage, wire, beads, ribbons, and fabric to create fun and exciting handmade projects. Join Mrs. Smith and experience the “magic of crafting.” All materials are included in this program that runs from 3:15-4:30 p.m. Instructor: June Smith has lived in Weston with her family for the past 19 years. Upon moving to Weston, Mrs. Smith became active as a volunteer and an employee of the Weston Public Schools. She is currently a kindergarten aide at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Mrs. Smith is well-known for her creativity, enjoys working with children, and is looking forward to sharing her crafting skills with her students. They will learn about flowers - different types, varieties, scents, colors -which ones work best for arranging. Students will design and create an arrangement each week and be able to take the arrangements home to enjoy. This class provides a truly hands- on floral experience! Self-confidence, poise, dramatic expression, coordination of movement and an endless opportunity for imagination sums up an hour with Mary Jo. The class will expose the children to Broadway tunes, hip-hip music to name a few. Voice projection, poise and delivery will be enhanced thru theater games, adlib, quick-fire dialogues, and snippets. Mini plays created by the children will bring out the inner director in every child. The class will incorporate dance movement, traditional, lyrical, and hip-hop to encourage self-expression and control of body movement. Instructor: Mary Jo Colman has been a drama instructor at Hurlbutt for 6 years and is currently a preschool teacher in New Canaan. She has worked professionally with the International Mexican Dance Co, NYC Ballet Company, Mozartina Conservatory, and the Westchester Ballet Company. Mary Jo has studied master classes under the direction of Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Andrea de la Conte of Spain, Connoisseurs in Stamford, and many others in NYC. She comes equipped with endless energy, innovative delivery, and a positive attitude that engages every child.
