7 th and 8 th grade lab.

Name _______________________________

In this lab you will demonstrate your understanding of writing chemical equations, which include writing the formulas of compounds correctly, and making accurate observations. The observations that you are be required to make may involve smell, change in temperature, change in color, and generation of gases, all of which has to be recorded. (DO NOT SNIFF ANY GAS BY PUTTING YOUR NOSE DIRECTLY

OVER THE GAS).

Chemical Reactions

Purpose: To determine if a chemical reaction has taken place from making careful observations.

Materials:

Procedures:

Reaction 1

1.

To a conical flask add a small amount of barium hydroxide crystals.

2.

To the same flask add Ammonium nitrate crystals, then swirl and record your observations.

Reaction 2

3.

In a beaker mix a small amount of iron filings and sulfur, stir using a stirring rod and pour into a pie plate.

4.

Heat the stirring rod to red heat and plunge the rod into the mixture and record your observations.

Reaction 3

5.

In a clean test tube add sodium chloride crystals, add water and observe, record what you saw.

Reaction 4

6.

In a test tube pour a small amount of sodium hydroxide, then add approximately three drops of phenolphthalein to the solution, then record your observations.

7.

Then add a small amount of hydrochloric acid to the mixture and record your observations.

Reaction 5

8.

Wash the glass ware that you have used, and have finished with in order to continue with the lab.

9.

In a clean test tube add a small amount of Iron(lll) chloride solution, then add a small amount of sodium hydroxide to the same tube and record your observations.

Reaction 6

10.

To a clean test tube add a small amount of sodium silicate, then add a small amount of cobalt chloride and record your observation.

Reaction 7

11.

To a small test tube add two small nuggets of zinc, and then add approximately 10 mL of acid

(HCl).

12.

Cover the top with your thumb do not allow the gas to escape, when the pressure builds to a high level light a splint on fire. Quickly remove your thumb place the splint into the tube and remove it. Record your observation.

Reaction 8

13.

Mix a small amount of sodium chloride crystals with hydrochloric acid in a test tube and record your observations.
