Chelsea Park Improvements Questionnaire Results Summary There are two scores from the paper questionnaires taking into account that some people prioritised their top three projects. Both scores have been considered. Priority Paper results no prioritisation Paper results with prioritisation scores Survey monkey 1 Furniture Furniture Path 2 Artwork Path Furniture 3 Playkit Playkit Artwork 4 Path All age gym All age gym 5 All age gym Artwork Playkit Using these results we can work out scores for each project based on the following scores: 1st priority scores +5 1. Gym = 5 5th priority scores 0 Survey monkey results 20 total responses. 1. The most popular improvement idea was to install a new tarmac path linking to the Brincliffe Edge entrance with 42% people voting this a top priority and 37% voting it a good idea when funding permits. But 21% thought this wasn’t a good idea. (79% positive, 21% negative) 2. The second most popular proposal was to install more park furniture. But people recognised that this could be done when funding permitted, with only 17% voting it a top priority but 61% voting for it to be done when funding permitted. 22% thought it wasn’t a good idea. (78% positive, 22% negative) Comments 1. 2. 3. benches, not picnic tables a simple sloping (transparent if possible)roof covered area and space for people to hold workshops eg early morning chi kung/tai chi classes or similar, community art which will live in the park, a shelter from the rain. This would be at the top along the edge where football and cricket is sometimes played picnic tables would be a very good addition to the park 4. would be ideal for walkers, and parents with young kids, and elderly 3. Artwork in the park was less clear cut, with an overall positive response of 65% and 35% negative. But of that 53% thought it was a good idea when funding permits. (65% positive 35% negative) 1. 2. artwork would be lovely - but this can be orchestrated in other ways also artwork made in the park for the park by park-goers 4. Only 10% voted for all age gym equipment as a top priority, with 32% voting it a good idea when funding permits and 58% saying it wasn’t a good idea (42% positive 58% negative) 1. 2. 3. see Millhouses and Endcliffe Park, evaluation of their usage old style indestructible ping pong tables and anything else that encourages people to get together good for local community adding interest into fitness, and for people who can't afford the gym Activity for teens. 5. Older children’s play kit was opposed by most of those filling in this survey. 69% thought it wasn’t a good idea. 26% thought it might be worthwhile funding permitted but only 5% thought it was a top priority. 1. 2. 3. again, see the questionnaire from Endcliffe Park this will make the park have the same predictable character as every other. see The main strength of chelsea park is it's 2 hills and undergrowth. These have a great play value albeit undervalued Additional comments 1. The present level of mud on the slopes precludes anybody other than the most ardent walker from attempting to cross the from the Chelsea Road to the top. 2. I've used this park for over 25 years and it is fabulous, especially now that the play area for young children has been so imaginatively done. The covered area is also a well-used spot. I'd like to see Marion's Meadow nurtured and historically, more planting on the mound and perimeters might be useful regarding the dreadful sludgy component of the upper area. It is pretty perfect as is but given the longterm usage, paths as indicated on the plans are the only viable consideration even though they're costly. 3. Dog walkers are actually the primary users of Chelsea Park (count the number of dog visitors against the number of children visitors). When the school holidays appear, we are suddenly made to feel like a nuisance. If you add more expensive play equipment, we'll be made to feel even more unwelcome. We don't get our voices heard as much as the yummy mummies, because a "Party in the Park" is not a dog's idea of fun... 4. A path around the perimeter, as at present on the Chelsea Road side would be very much appreciated as the grass can be very slippy when wet, preferably around the edges rather than through the middle of the field, in which case a couple of extra benches may be useful. Too much development of the park as suggested in the other proposals would ruin a lovely, friendly, local green area. 5. Apart from being in favour of what would be a very helpful tarmac path down the East side of the park (as above), I think the park should be left much as it is - a thoroughly pleasant, quiet open space, and there are few of them in this area. Brincliffe Wood is another, but it's not so accessible to older people. Could some of the money be used for fencing improvements and maintenance there? 6. re 3: the steep proposed section of path leading out of the woods down to the path between the little hills could do with a firm path even though after all the rain it is not muddy. To tarmac over the path through the woods is not only a waste of money but detrimentally affects the drainage within the woods and its natural composting process (apart from aesthetically feeling wrong). Saved money could be spent on workshops see 1. Thanks (andybarco@yahoo.com) 7. Chelsea Park doesn't need a lot of improvement perhaps some picnic benches near the current childrens' play area. As a responsible dog owner and a local resident who uses the park on a daily basis I am concerned that the proposed changes will alter the nature of the park, The vast majority of users are either young families, who use the playground area or dog walkers. The idea of a path from the Brincliffe Edge entrance may seem a good idea but it would be a tempting attraction for BMX bikers and skateboarders so altering the quiet nature of the park. In my view the best way to spend the money would be to use it to expand the park by clearing and opening up the area behind the Brincliffe Towers building, which at present is overgrown and inaccessible. And please, please do not put anything on the flat area at the top of the park , the only flat area where children can play cricket and football. 8. Out door gym equipment would be excellent to see in the park as is found in many other parks, I think it would encourage fitness and use of the park in general. 9. An outdoor Low Profile Dog Fountain would be very beneficial for all round yearly use. 10. Footpath - good for safety and easy access for the disabled, as well as runners. Helps preserve the grass. Hot drinks van in the park? A question was asked whether people might like a hot drinks van to visit the park. This was split with 50% saying yes and 50% saying no. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Daily - might i suggest contacting Tamper Coffee Bar to tender for the spot Weekends mornings 7am-8am 6.30am to 7:15am Paper Questionnaire Results – 70 total responses Collecting the paper questionnaire results was a little more complicated. People were asked to vote for their top three priority projects out of five options: Park furniture, all age outdoor gym equipment, new tarmac link footpath, artwork in the park and new play kit. The difficulty in data collection came because whilst some people marked 3 items, alternatively some people gave weighting to them with their first, second and third priorities. In this instance I have collected both sets of data and compared them. Results from written questionnaires without weighting for 1st-3rd priority (all votes =1) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Furniture – 61% Artwork -48% Playkit – 40% Path – 38% Gym- 37% Results from written questionnaires with priority weighting, where 1st priority scores 3, 2nd=2, 3rd=1. 1. Furniture - 52 2. Path- 44 3.
