Close to Famous Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: Foster and her mom, Rayka, are driving fast, trying to escape her mom’s boyfriend, Huck. We learn that Foster loves to bake. She learned from a nice old lady named Marietta Morningstar. They are now leaving Memphis. Chapter 2: We learn that Huck hit Rayka in the eye after breaking through her window. They left and are now driving to West Virginia. As they enter West Virginia they run into very bad fog. Chapter 3: A nice lady named Kitty and her husband, Lester, rescue their car from the edge. They drive into Culpepper, a very small town. They can’t afford a place to stay, but then they see Kitty and Lester again, and they offer Foster and Rayka their trailer to stay in behind the house. Chapter 4: Rayka goes to the nurse, and the nurse takes a picture of her injury. They decide to move into the Silver Bullet, and both think it’s pretty cool. Foster freaks out when she meets Elvis the cat. Chapter 5: Foster freaks out when she can’t find the pillow that belonged to her father (Kevin). We learn more about her dad’s army history. They start meeting the crazy people in town, especially Perseverance, who will not let the church be sold. Chapter 6: We learn that their dad left an inheritance to the family, and Rayka is saving the money for her college tuition. Foster heard her mom crying while she was pretending to be hosting her own cooking show. They decide to go out for more food. Chapter 7: Foster and Rayka go to the grocery store. They meet Macon and learn about Miss Charleena. Chapter 8: Macon comes over and he and Foster talk about things. We learn that Macon wants to make documentaries. At the end of the chapter Huck calls Rayka’s cell phone. Chapter 9 We learn that Huck has the pillowcase, but it’s more important to Foster that her mom not go back and get it. Mom gets a job at the hardware store. We meet Perseverance’s son, Garland. Chapter 10 Macon invites Foster over to Miss Charleena’s house. Rayka is excited. Chapter 11 We learn about Miss Charleena’s career. They take a tour of her house. Chapter 12 Macon “fires” Foster as his assistant. Foster meets the middle school principal and says she doesn’t like school. Rayka again tells Foster to “make the best of it.” Chapter 13 Foster goes to Angry Wayne’s and goes inside. She gives Wayne and some customers some cupcakes/muffins. The police officer comes and buys them. Foster is happy that people love her baked goods. Chapter 14 She starts baking for Angry Wayne. Macon calls her and tells her he’s sick. She’s going to have to do his job for Miss Charleena. Chapter 15 Foster goes to Miss Charleena’s house. She gets the list of chores. Foster can’t read it. Miss Charleena tricks her and Foster has to admit that she cannot read. Chapter 16 Foster runs away. She comes back to Miss Charleena and they make a deal. Foster will teach Charleena to cook and Charleena will teacher Foster to read. Chapter 17 Charleena takes Foster home. Her mom meets Miss Charleena. Foster makes more cupcakes. Chapter 18 Charleena acts like she’s dying. Dr. Weber tells her she’s not. Foster talks to Stan, who wants her to be in a new movie. Chapter 19 Macon gets mad at Foster because he thinks she’s trying to take his job. Foster makes more cupcakes for Angry Wayne. Chapter 20 Garland and his mom run Helping Hands. Foster helps feed the people staying at Helping Hands. Miss Charleena tells Foster she’s going to teach her how to read. Chapter 21 Foster tells her mom that she’s not sure anyone can teach her to read. Foster and Miss Charleena begin reading from a cookbook. Macon finds out that Foster cannot read. Chapter 22 Foster runs out of Miss Charleena’s house. Hey day gets worse when she learns that Sonny Kroll has been in an accident. She wants to write him a letter but she can’t, so she writes him a very short note. Chapter 23 Foster is getting better at reading. She is also selling a ton of cupcakes. Things are starting to get better. Chapter 24 Garland, Foster and Macon go to prison to try to interview the warden. Macon gets mad. Foster’s mom announces she has to go back to Memphis to get some things done. Chapter 25 Lester takes Foster fishing. Foster’s mom returns from Memphis…with the pillowcase. So it’s obvious she saw Huck. She also has a bruise on her arm. Chapter 26 Foster finds out that Huck knows where they’re living. Foster is sad because she knows her mama lied to her. We learn why Perseverance is fighting so hard to keep church. Chapter 27 We learn that Foster hates the pretty dress she wore to 6 th grade graduation because it reminds her of how people told her she was dumb. Foster tells Huck that they’ve moved from Culpepper and that her mom has a new boyfriend. These are lies. Chapter 28 Rayka tells Foster about how her dad hit her mom when she was growing up. All friends are helping to teach Foster how to read. Chapter 29 Charleena shows Foster what is in her box (magazines that talk about her ex-husband and his new girlfriend). Miss Charleena takes a new role as the voice of a horse in a cartoon. Chapter 30 Miss Charleena gives Helping Hands a big check. They’re excited. Foster makes cupcakes with the kids. Duke (bad guy) comes back for his family. Chapter 31 Duke tries to get his family. Macon gets word to Angry Wayne about what’s going on. Angry Wayne takes down Duke when he tries to escape. Chapter 32 Foster is becoming kind of a celebrity. Miss Charleena leaves town to make movie so she won’t be able to teach Foster anymore. Before she goes she gives Foster a graduation ceremony. Chapter 33 Foster’s mom sings at a concert. Foster sells a bunch of cupcakes. She also meets her new reading teacher Chapter 34 Macon records a video of Foster doing a cooking show so she can send it to Sonny Kroll. Chapter 35 Sonny writes Foster back. Foster is so excited. Everything has worked out.
