Inside Earth Lessons Name ___________________________ Earth Science – Volcanoes and Earthquakes Date ___________ Now that you’ve had some practice with taking notes using the Cornell style, I’d like for you to work presenting information about one section of the next book to the class using notes you produce together. Please read the following directions carefully. For the Section YOU are Teaching to the Class: You and your partner may use up to 45 minutes (one class period) to teach the class all about your section of the text. Be sure to limit your information ONLY to that which is in your own section. Do not stress information for another section. While teaching you MUST: 1. Display a copy of your notes for the class to copy from. You can use the overhead or you can type your notes and display them on the Interwrite board. a. The notes must be legible. Neatness matters. Spelling matters. b. The notes should be revealed a bit at a time as you explain them. c. The notes should be in the Cornell style we’ve used in class. d. The notes should NOT include questions for study. Everyone will do this for part of their homework. 2. Give the class some homework to turn in the next day besides writing questions in their notes. For this you COULD use: a. The prewritten worksheet designed by the writers. Be prepared to explain what needs to be done, clarify any confusing parts, and answer questions. b. Or, make your own worksheet to give the students some practice with using the information you presented. It should be no longer than a traditional assignment. If you design your own you’ll need to be especially careful to make sure your information is accurate, specific and understandable. This can be harder than it appears. You will need to get an OKAY FROM ME for this WELL IN ADVANCE. c. In either case, you will need to hand in a KEY with the answers to your homework. 3. All group members must participate equally. Turn in a sheet explaining what each group member did to help prepare for your lesson. Work together. Be nice. You and your partner may use part of the class period to help explain your topic using other aides. So, While teaching your section you MAY: 4. Use a diagram, model, activity or demonstration which helps to clarify your topic. The point here is to include anything that can help make the information more understandable or more memorable. a. Diagrams (2-D) can be made on overheads, poster board or the computer. They should be labeled clearly. Neatness matters. Spelling matters. Size also matters – it needs to be easy to read. b. Models (3-D) should also be labeled. Neatness, spelling, size matter. c. Activities are hands-on experiences that involve the whole class. This must be SAFE, must involve inexpensive materials, must be easy to clean, must be purposeful (not just for fun, but must help teach something!) I must okay this WELL IN ADVANCE! d.Demonstrations (something you plan to DO in front of the class to help make a concept clearer) must be cleared with me first. Your demonstration cannot take more than 10 minutes of the class period. It must be directly related to your topic. It must take place IN the room. It must be safe. 5. Show a video clip to help the class understand your topic. a. I need to preview it at least 2 days before you will present to the class. b. It can be no more than 10 minutes long. You can use a section of a longer show and recommend the show for further viewing at home. c. It should present information in a way that makes the topic more clear or more memorable. If the information disagrees with anything in the book, do not use it UNLESS it is helping to give more current and correct information. If your video clip includes information that is more up-to-date, be sure it comes from a reliable source (not just some stranger making up weird stuff on the internet!) Reliable sources about earth science include: i. The USGS (US Geological Survey) www.usgs.gov ii. National Geographic www.nationalgeographic.com iii. The Geological Society of America www.geosociety.org iv. You can also expect most governmental sites (.gov) and educational sites (.edu) are reliable. For the Sections You are NOT Teaching: While you are part of the class you will need to cooperate with the presenting group just as you would with any teacher. Pay attention. Be nice. Be patient, cooperative and engaged. Don’t interrupt, do what you’re asked to do, and hold your questions until the end. You will also need to: 1. Copy the notes as written for you into your science notebook using the Cornell 2/3 - 1/3 style. 2. For homework you will need to add questions to your notes. Be sure to have at least one question per heading. 3. For homework you will also need to complete the homework assigned by the group. Use your notes to help you. 4. ASK QUESTIONS about anything you find confusing. YOU WILL TAKE A TEST ON THESE UNITS AND YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF THIS INFORMATION! You can, of course, read the sections yourself, but the point is for you to learn the information in class with help from your classmates. They are the experts on their section. They’ll be asking YOU questions, too, when you are presenting the sections for which YOU are the experts! 5. Use body basics at all times. Inside Earth Earthquakes and Volcanoes Sections include: Be sure you include information from ALL of the pages listed for your section: Ch 1 Plate Tectonics Sec 1 – Earth’s Interior Sec 2 – Convenction Currents & Mantle Sec 3 – Drifting Continents Sec 4 – Sea-Floor Spreading Sec 5 – The Theory of Plate Techtonics pp 16 - 24 pp 25 – 27 & 48 pp 28 - 32 pp 33 - 41 pp 42 - 47 Ch 2 Earthquakes Sec 1 – Earth’s Crust in Motion Sec 2 – Measuring Earthquakes Sec 3 – Earthquake Hazards and Safety Sec 4 – Monitoring Faults pp 54 – 63 pp 64 – 71 pp 72 – 77 pp 78 – 82 Ch 3 Volcanoes Sec 1 – Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics Sec 2 – Volcanic Activity Sec 3 – Volcanic Landforms Sec 4 – Volcanoes in the Solar System pp 88 – 92 pp 93 – 102 pp 103 – 109 pp 110 – 112 Sections will be assigned at random and will be presented in order as shown. Groups with shorter sections should expect to use more of the optional activities above. Tests will be given after each chapter. I will teach a review lesson before each test.
