Ms Tarryn Engelberg
Anglo American
Dear Ms Engelberg,
I am writing to express my interest in the internship opportunity available at
Anglo American in partnership with the Africa Careers Network at African
Leadership Academy. As an inaugural graduate of ALA and native of Cape Town,
I have had my sights set on returning home to engage in engineering
opportunities once I have completed my studies abroad. Anglo American as a
company, with its South African and global footprint, represents to me just such
an opportunity.
As a second year Mechanical Engineering candidate at Harvard University, I am
in the process of discovering which track within my course I will choose to
follow as an area of specialisation and starting point for my career. Consequently
I have explored internships within the motor-manufacturing and renewable
energy sectors, but I am as of yet unexposed to South Africa’s vast mining sector.
As an industry leader, Anglo American would provide me with a breadth of
experience within mining operations in the country as well as a foretaste of what
awaits me as a qualified engineer upon graduation.
My former internships provided me with involvement in marketing and research
respectively, but with little acquaintance to the work and life of the engineers in
their companies. I now possess more skills within the mechanical engineering
curriculum, which I feel better equip me for exploring the field at this stage. Most
importantly I feel that Anglo American is a company with the scope and
scale to allow me to return to South Africa and plough back into the economy
and community, whilst fulfilling my engineering ambitions.
I am reachable most easily by email and will be available for a telephonic or
Skype interview at your convenience. I look forward to your correspondence.
Sincerely,
William Mokothu
