Elevations on the Shoshone ranges from 4,600 feet at the mouth of the spectacular Clarks Fork Canyon, to 13,804 feet on Gannett Peak, Wyoming's highest point. Position Information The Shoshone National Forest is interested in identifying candidates with the skill sets to fill an interdisciplinary position with primary responsibility for the Forest Botany, Soils, and Ecology Programs. Responses to this interest outreach will be utilized to evaluate how to best structure a permanent position for these resource areas. The Position The Forest This position serves as Staff Specialist for the, Botany, Soils, and Ecology programs with responsibility for leadership, coordination, planning, and implementation in these areas. These responsibilities include providing expert advice to Interdisciplinary Team members, Forest Supervisor, Resource Staff Officers, and District Rangers; serving as liaison between the Forest and the Regional Office; formulating and recommending local policy; representing the Forest at meetings and workshops; developing program budgets for outyear planning; serving as internal and external Forest contact for botany, soils, and ecology activities; and developing and implementing in-service educational programs for Forest personnel. The Shoshone National Forest was established in 1891 as a part of the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve. The forest is an integral part of the 10 million acre Greater Yellowstone Area which is centered in Yellowstone National Park. The Shoshone consists of 2,470,430 acres of varied terrain ranging from sagebrush flats to rugged mountain peaks. Over one half of the forest is designated wilderness. With Yellowstone National Park on its western border, the Shoshone encompasses an area from the Montana state line south to Lander, Wyoming, and includes portions of the Absaroka, Wind River, and Beartooth mountain ranges. The western boundary of the forest to south of Yellowstone is the crest of the Continental -- 1 -- The incumbent develops and integrates botanical, soil resource, and ecological, information into Forest activities. Typical projects could include revegetation plans, assisting with ecological site descriptions, botanical inventory and monitoring, rangeland vegetation identification support, and analysis which will require strong technical proficiencies in soils and botany. The population of Cody is approximately 10,000. Temperatures average 23 degrees in January and 72 degrees in July. Annual rainfall averages 9.4 inches; snowfall averages 35.20 inches yearly. Sunshine brightens the sky more than 300 days a year. Snow does not stay long on the ground here in the winter. In January or February, 50 degree days are not unusual. Warm Chinook winds usually melt the snow within two or three days of a storm. In particular the position will: provide technical advice for plans, programs, and projects; makes onthe-ground investigations of complex situations; write reports of findings; recommend and develop management practices for practical application and implementation by land managers; develop procedures and set standards to investigate new and unusual problems on the Forest; conduct environmental analyses of proposed projects and activities; develop responses for appeal and litigation records; monitor the effectiveness of mitigation measures; implement appropriate soils monitoring protocols; and maintain the Forest soils and botany inventory information. The community of Cody offers numerous churches, doctors, dentists, an excellent hospital, a nursing home, public library, 6 banks, local shopping, a movie theatre, a senior citizen center, a volunteer fire department, Search and Rescue, police department, sheriff's department, and an airport with daily connects to Denver and Salt Lake City. Cody's school district is one of the finest in the Rocky Mountain area. Five elementary schools, one middle school and one senior high school have an average student to teacher ratio of less than 20 to 1. Several private and Christian schools also are available.
