UNIVERSITYofLOUISVILLE College of Arts and Sciences Center for Academic Advising & Student Services Office: 502-852-5502 Gardiner Hall Fax: 502-852-7230 University of Louisville Louisville, KY 40292 October 13, 2014 TO: Faculty Assembly FROM: Student Grievance and Academic Discipline Committee RE: Policy Change for Academic Dishonesty Dear Assembly: Academic Integrity is a problem and concern for the College of Arts & Sciences. The Student Grievance and Academic Discipline Committee would like to propose a change to the wording of the Statement of Academic Discipline in the Undergraduate Catalog (see attached) and an added level of response to student violations of this policy. While it does not change the important role faculty and instructors play in the process, nor does it seek to circumvent faculty authority in the process, it is intended to add a response from the Dean of the College, further stressing the important message that faculty are sending. Current Approach: When a student’s name is submitted to the Dean’s Liaison for a violation of Academic Integrity, that student is checked for any previous violations of the policy. If none are found, the incident is added to the student’s record with no further communication with the student. Faculty have full authority to address student’s actions in the manner most fitting for their classroom. Proposed Policy: When a student’s name is submitted to the Dean’s Liaison for a violation of Academic Integrity, that student is checked for any previous violations of the policy. If none are found, the incident is added to the student’s record and a follow up letter is sent on the Dean’s behalf stressing the importance of Academic Integrity, providing resources to the student, and encouraging the student to learn from their experience and move forward in their academics. Faculty will continue to have full authority to address student’s actions in the manner most fitting for their classroom. Students being submitted with no previous violations will not have any additional penalty imposed, unless requested by the instructor for the course. It is hoped that a reaffirmation of the faculty’s response to the student’s actions will further stress the seriousness of the decision and reiterate the seriousness of Academic Integrity.
