Essential Knowledge 1.B.1 - Organisms share many conserved core
processes and features that evolved and are widely distributed among
organisms today.

an understanding of the pattern of passage (transmission) of genes from

All living things share a common ancestor, as
explained by consistency of structure in DNA and
RNA.
The four bases in a DNA are adenine, thymine,
guanine, and cytosine. RNA is composed of the
same bases except for uracil in place of thymine.
Initiation, Elongation, and Termination are the
three steps of Transcription.
A gene consists of a sequence of bases on DNA
that code for a specific protein.
 Describe the components of nucleic acids.
 List the 4 bases of DNA and the 4 bases of RNA.
 Form a complimentary strand of DNA when given the
base sequence of its corresponding strand.
 Trace the formation of a protein from a gene including
all steps in transcription and translation.

During the Smart Notebook lesson designed to introduce concepts, students will be continually questioned on these
concepts using a combination of class work/homework questions and the SMART Response system. Classwork and
Homework questions will be discussed as a class and misconceptions will be addressed by the teacher prior to the
formal evaluations listed below.
