Diorama Book Report
Name ________________________
Build a miniature diorama/stage setting/shadow box for a scene in the book. Be as detailed as
you can. Share your miniature scene with the class.
Book Requirements:
1. Books must get final approval by Mrs. Minnich. You may choose the book that you read,
as long as it meets the following requirements:
 The book must have a minimum of 100 pages of reading.
 The book must be an appropriate reading level.
 The book may not be one read in a previous class.
 You may not use books that are collections of stories or statistics.
 Books cannot be graphic novels.
 Books must be appropriate and acceptable reading material.
2. Story Plot Map: You will need to submit a story plot map that includes all of these literary
elements: exposition, conflict, rising action events, climax, falling action events, resolution,
and theme if there is one.
3. Checkpoints: The progress on your reading and project will be done 6 times throughout the
marking period. Once you have chosen your book, we will determine how many pages you
need to read for 4 checkpoints: beginning, half-way point, and when you should be finished
with the book. The plot map will need to be completed to that point for each check point. The
5th & 6th checkpoints will be within two week before your due date, and will check the progress
of your project.
Written Requirements:
4. Written summary: Write a summary of the story that includes these elements- title, author,
exposition, conflict, 3-5 important rising actions, climax, 1-2 falling actions, and resolution.
Use your plot map to help you. This summary can be written, typed, or placed on note
cards. Be sure to label your elements.
5. Vocabulary puzzle: Find at least 10 words that you or others might not know. Write the
definitions for them. Design a word puzzle with them, such as a word search or scramble
word. You may use a website, such as http://www.discoveryeducation.com/freepuzzlemaker/ , that will create your puzzle for you. Remember to print out the answer key—
or make one. Turn in your puzzle a day earlier, but no later than the morning before you
present, so I can make copies for your classmates.

Diorama Requirements:
6. Diorama: Build a miniature diorama/stage setting/shadow box for a scene in the book. Be
as detailed as you can. This can be in a shoe box, on a sturdy piece of cardboard, or
anything else that will allow you to set up a scene.
 The scene you choose must be important to the story. For instance, a diorama of his cute
kitty drinking milk would probably not be an important scene.
 Make the scene as detailed as you can. Be creative, but your scene must clearly
represent the scene you tell us about in your paragraph below.
 Write the chapter or page numbers of where the scene occurred in the book on the
diorama.
 Write a descriptive paragraph (6-8 sentences) telling about the scene and its importance
to the story plot.
 Effort, neatness, and creativity will be included in your grade.
Presentation Requirements:
7. Summary: Include- title, author, exposition, conflict, 3-5 important rising actions, climax, 1-2
falling actions, and resolution. You may use your summary from #4, but do not read it.
8. Diorama: Explain your diorama and read the descriptive paragraph you wrote about it.
9. Rating: Rate your book on a scale of 0-5, with 5 being “I loved it!” Tell us why you would or
would not recommend it to others.
10. Voice: make sure you, and whoever you might have helping you, speak loud enough for
everyone to hear.
11. Eye contact: look up at the audience; do not have your head down and read during the
entire presentation
12. Length: Your entire presentation should last a minimum of 4 minutes to a maximum of 8
minutes. If you feel you need longer then you must get the approval of Mrs. Minnich first.
13. Organization: You should be well organized BEFORE your presentation. Make sure all
papers, materials, props, etc. are ready and are placed in the order that you will need them
during the presentation. Points will be deducted if you need to run to your locker or you are
missing them.
