LISD FFA SHOW TEAM CONTRACT MEMBERSHIP ON THE LISD FFA SHOW TEAM IS CONSIDERED A PRIVILEGE; THEREFORE, THE FOLLOWING RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED. UPDATED: AUGUST 2013 RULES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Advisor: As your advisors, we are dedicated to your success, the success of the livestock team, and the welfare of the animals that represent our team. As your advisors, we will Lead the selection & purchasing process for student animal projects Provide advice on feeding, grooming, equipment, and other necessary purchases Provide instruction and recommendations to help students properly groom animals for show, train their animals prior to show, learn animal anatomy and facts necessary for showmanship, and exhibit their animals successfully in the show ring Provide students with entry forms for all school sponsored livestock shows Tag animals for state shows Provide transportation for livestock to and from school-sponsored livestock shows Ensure that all students who are competing have followed the rules and guidelines set forth in this contract & barn rules o The LISD ag science teachers reserve the right to dismiss any student from the Livestock Show team on a per show basis based on eligibility, behavior, or improper care of animal Students: As members of the LISD FFA Livestock Show Team, students will conduct themselves in a way that brings pride to our team: Treat animals ethically at all times Attend FFA scheduled health checks for your animal as scheduled Submit entry forms for shows by due date set by Ag Science Teachers Read and follow all show rules and regulations for each show in which you compete Follow all school student rules at all FFA show team events including anytime the student exhibits their animal as a representative of LISD FFA Follow all rules and regulations as set forth in this contract & barn rules Work with fellow show team members and advisors to maintain cleanliness in the livestock trailers, barns, and other work areas While at a show, arrive on time to scheduled feeding and team meetings times, remain in the areas designated by the advisors, and leave only when dismissed by the advisor Follow all instructions from any county FFA advisor, show coordinator, or judge Refrain from cursing, arguing, and horseplay in the barns and show ring Wear appropriate clothing at all times while representing the show team at livestock events Wear appropriate show clothing including: jeans pressed and in good condition, collared shirt, and boots Assist fellow show team members before, during, and after show Remain eligible with school to participate in extracurricular activities (attendance, grades, discipline) Obtain supplies necessary to show your animal (see Supplies) Display a positive attitude and good sportsmanship at any time you represent the LISD FFA Livestock Show Team Parent Responsibilities: To help promote teamwork, good showmanship, and success, your assistance as a parent of the livestock show team is very important and valued. Please help us and: Review show team guidelines, show rules, barn rules and school rules with your child frequently. Ensure your child accurately completes and turns in all registration paperwork and other required forms on time. Refrain from the use of tobacco, alcohol, and profanity at all FFA livestock events. Support the decisions and instructions given by FFA advisors, show judges, and other officials at all FFA and livestock events. Provide positive support of your child and the entire FFA livestock team. Ensure that your student is on time to all required meetings & that they follow all show team contract guidelines. Other Key Rules/Responsibilities: 1. Students are responsible for caring for and monitoring their show animals on a daily basis. Advisors have the right to deny student’s participation in FFA livestock shows if their animal is obviously underweight, underfed, in poor health, or in poor physical or mental condition that diminishes their show appeal, threatens the health of other animals, threatens their animal’s health, or brings discredit to our organization. As managers of the LISD Chester Boyd Ag Barn Facility, it is the Ag Science advisors responsibility to make decisions that ensure the overall health of everyone’s projects. 2. Parents/Students may be asked to leave school or county property or any FFA sponsored event for misconduct, aggressive or disrespectful behavior towards advisors, parents, or students, or any behavior that brings discredit to our organization. 3. In order to attend and show at a major livestock show (Ft. Worth or Houston), a cattle student must have shown their animal at a minimum of one jackpot show in the fall semester. Failure to do this will result in following barn rule procedures for removal from the barn. 4. Any student who looses eligibility for 2 consecutive 9 week periods will loose their privilege to show with the LISD Show Team. Refer to the barn contract under eligibility for details on removing animal from the ag barn. 5. Students who choose to attend livestock shows outside of the designated school shows must follow all school, FFA, and show team guidelines as they still represent our organization. 6. All show team members will be expected to group purchase hay monthly (~5weeks) and will share this hay as a team unless directed otherwise by an ag science teacher. 7. Clipping & Fitting will be done by a professional fitter for all animals traveling as part of the LISD FFA Show Team in order to ensure the highest quality project for our students. Times will be scheduled throughout the year for the hired professional to visit the barn or show to handle fitting. 8. Students will be expected to attend mandatory monthly species meetings on dates established at their species meeting at the beginning of each year as well as any mandatory barn clean ups that are established. Barn clean ups will be held as frequently as needed. Students will be given at least a two weeks notice. No excuses for missing these dates will be accepted and barn referrals will be issued for absences or tardiness. 9. Any decisions or instructions made by the ag science advisor at a school sponsored show are final. Any discussion can directed to ag science advisor or school district administrators at a later date. By working together as a team, caring for the health and welfare of your animals, and dedicating your time to practicing, studying, and grooming for exhibitions, the LISD FFA Livestock Team is sure to have a smooth and successful year! Feb 22, 2014 Houston Livestock Show, (Heifers/Steers: Mar 2014) Denton County Livestock Show, March (Dates to be announced) Optional Jackpot Show Opportunities will be announced by the Ag Science Teachers as information becomes available. These may be limited in order to maintain safe & healthy animal projects. SPECIFIC CATTLE SHOW TEAM SUPPLIES & RULES: Feed for correct number of days (please think about how much this will be so not to over pack on feed) Showstick Original Papers Feed pan Hay, Straw & Shavings will be purchased upon arrival to Major Stock Shows Show halter Neck Tie Scotch comb Shampoo/scrub brush No Water buckets- we will be packing a few that night to take and share No Personal Showboxeso All small tack (shampoos, show halter, brushes, etc) will be put in either the Marcus or LHS showbox o We will be taking 4 blow dryers & water hoses for everyone to share o There will be a combo lock put on each showbox & everyone will be told the combos for both showboxes. This will give everyone access whenever they need in the showboxes. RULES & EXPECTATIONS : Clipping & Fitting will be done by a professional fitter for all animals traveling as part of the LISD FFA Show Team in order to ensure the highest quality project for our students. All feeding will take place outside at the tieouts unless instructed differently by an ag teacher. All calves will be tied out at night & tied in during the day unless a student is told differently by an ag teacher. No buckets (feed or water) will be left for calves during non feeding times. Be on time to feeding times. During show days, no students are allowed to leave the show barns (no parking lot) without permission of an ag science teacher and must be accompanied by an adult. During feeding times: o Go feed your calves o In the evening feeding, while calves are eating all students should be in the barn cleaning up the stalls, spreading out shavings, etc. o In the morning feeding, after all are done eating & brought inside, all students should go to tie outs and clean up o No student may leave from a feeding without checking out with an Ag Teacher All haired calves should be blown off each morning after feeding. If the calf is dirty, it should be washed also. If you have a question or an issue, contact an ag teacher. Do not take it upon yourself to solve a dispute. CONSCEQUENCES FOR BREAKING SHOW TEAM CONTRACT RULES Failure to comply with show team rules at a school sponsored show will result in a LISD Show Team Demerit for each offense. An accumulation of 3 or more demerits in a show season will result in a student loosing the privilege to show at the next show opportunity (could be current show if applicable). Student will also be responsible for completing an assigned task by an ag science teacher to regain their privilege to be a part of the LISD Show Team. If the problem persists, removal from the facilities can be enforced pending a conference with ag science teachers and LISD administration.
