2014 NACRAO Fall Conference Breakout Sessions Wednesday, November 12 Session #1: 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Admissions & Relationship Building Across Campus (Admissions) Bambi Sell, Admissions Assistant Director, and Gretchen Foster, Admissions Director, from Western Nebraska Community College-Scottsbluff will co-present this session. They will discuss Admissions working with other departments across campus to enhance recruitment efforts and create a team atmosphere within an institution. Better Late than Never? (Registrars) Denise Ellis, Registrar, from Doane College will present how Doane started to manage requests for late drops/withdraws for it's non-traditional student populations. Last year Doane College's School of Graduate & Professional Studies (G&PS) started a Late Drop and Withdraw Request (LDWR) committee. Denise will share why the committee was started, who's involved, and the progress that's been made. The session will be interactive to discuss how other schools handle these requests, and if different student populations get different treatment. Expansion of UNMC Allied Health Professions Programs to UNK Campus (Admissions & Registrars) Gregory Karst, Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, School of Allied Health Professions, from the University of Nebraska Medical Center will cover which UNMC programs are expanding to the new Health Science Education Building on the UNK campus, the timeline for expansion and information about the admissions processes for the programs at UNK. It will also include information on the new facilities currently under construction at UNK. Recruit and Retain with Sustainability (Admissions & Registrars) Kristin Hoesing, Central Community College-Columbus, will present this session. Central Community College is the only community college in NE to be an American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment signatory. CCC's Sustainability Coordinator will discuss and describe our commitment to providing sustainable practices and initiatives throughout campus, in the classroom, and opportunities to students. (over) Session #2: 1:55 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. Ambassadors - Who’s Running Your Office? (Admissions) Amy Gade from Wayne State Admissions and Michelle Heilig from College of Saint Mary Enrollment Services will present as a "part two" of their session from last year. Special focus on our suite of Transcript Services. Sexual Misconduct and Title IX (Admissions & Registrars) Presenter is Mackenzie Wilfong, Oklahoma State University. Mackenzie spoke at the 2014 AACRAO Annual Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver and is an attorney specializing in education and employment law and has been an enforcement attorney for the U.S. Department of Education. Session #3: 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Hot Topics in Higher Ed (Admissions & Registrars) Rich Morrell, UNL Registrar, and colleague, Kimra Schipporeit, UNK Director of Student Records/Registration, will present an overview of higher ed "hot topics" currently in the news. Discussion will be on such things as Performance Based Funding, College Readiness Initiative and Competency Based Education and their potential impact for our institutions. National College Application Campaign – Nebraska Style (Admissions & Registrars) Eric Drumheller of EducationQuest Foundation will present this session. As part of a national initiative sponsored by the American Council on Education, Nebraska has joined the American College Application Campaign (ACAC) and will launch Nebraska’s College Application Week November 17-21, 2014. EducationQuest Foundation serves as the state coordinator for this effort. The program will be piloted at six Nebraska high schools this year. Through this campaign, each participating high school will ensure that every senior applies to at least one college. The overall campaign goal is to increase the number of first-generation and lowincome students who pursue a college degree. This session will provide an overview of the Nebraska campaign, history of the national program, and insight on how your college or university can be involved in this exciting effort. Personality Influences in the Work Place (Admissions & Registrars) Krista Fritson, UNK Psychology Associate Professor and Licensed Clinical Psychologist, will present this session. This is an interactive, discussion session that explores personalities, their impact on relationships in the work place, and how to recognize your personality characteristics and others'. Sustainability and Admissions: You Really Can Reduce Emissions (Admissions) Kristin Hoesing, Admissions Director, and Minetta Khan, Sustainability Coordinator, both from Central Community College will co-present. Central Community College is the only community college in NE to be an American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment signatory. They will present CCC’s initiatives regarding reducing their carbon footprint and how they are going green. Breakout Sessions Thursday, November 13 Session #4: 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Fall Travel - EPP Round Table (Admissions) Michelle Heilig from the College of Saint Mary Enrollment Services will moderate this session providing a chance for people to talk about changes that took place during fall travel as well as bring up suggestions for the future. Hot Topics for Registrars (Registrars) Roger Hovey, Registrar, from Western Nebraska Community College will moderate a session to discuss current issues, ideas, and best practices for registrars. This will be a group session to share and compare notes. (over) In-State Tuition for Veterans (Admissions & Registrars) th Senator Galen Hadley from the 37 Legislative District will discuss LB 740, In-State Tuition for Veterans, signed into law this year and other higher education topics impacting Nebraska. Navigating NACRAO (Admissions & Registrars) Brad Green from UNK, Chair of the NACRAO Technology Committee, will lead this session. Join in an interactive session about navigating the new NACRAO website, such as benefits of the new members only. We want your feedback about how the website can be used more efficiently for our members! Session #5: 10:10 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. A Lesson in Diversity---What is in a Latino Name! (Admissions & Registrars) Maria Lopez, Diversity Coordinator, Central Community College-Grand Island will lead a roundtable discussion. This session is designed to help interpret the cultural traditions and the linguistic structures involved in how Latino names are constructed. Often how we ask for information from Latinos is a source of confusion for our prospective students as well as our admissions and registration offices. Legally Sharing Student Information (Admissions & Registrars) Jenny Lempka, Recruitment Coordinator, Bryan College of Health Sciences, will lead a roundtable discussion on how we as institutions can legally share student information in regards to protecting ourselves and our students, i.e. dangerous students on our campuses. What information can we share? How do we share this information? Who do we share this information with? Examples of these situations and how they have been handled in the past and how can we move forward and protect our students and ourselves. Navigating the Joint Services Transcript (Admissions & Registrars) JoAnn Moseman, UNL Academic Transfer Coordinator, will co-present with Barbie Kantor, Records Coordinator, from Metropolitan CC. This session will begin with a demo of the Joint Services Transcript and the ACE Military Guide and we'll talk about how we use military credit at a community college and at a university. The session will then open up to group discussion of military credit questions. Transfer Recruitment Roundtable (Admissions) Vanessa Hatfield-Reeker, Transfer Admissions Counselor, UNO will moderate. Join in a conversation about current challenges, opportunities, and best practices in recruiting transfer students to both 2-year and 4-year institutions. Discussion topics will be led by the attendees, but may include best practices in transfer student communication, events, and materials; how 2-year and 4-year institutions can cooperate to recruit students intending to transfer; and transfer fairs/table visits and how to make them effective.
