INTRODUCTION

Kia Ora from New Zealand!

The 2014 season is less than one month from starting, with snow dusting the tops of the South Island’s leading ski resorts already.

Christchurch International Airport and Queenstown

Airport are the two main gateways for Australian’s arriving on their winter ski holiday. Access has never been easier with direct connections from the Eastern

Seaboard and there is more frequency. Queenstown

Airport will host, on average 50 trans-Tasman flights per week, which is up 10 from last season!

The New Zealand ski season is due to kick off on 7 th June.

Coronet Peak, Queenstown’s closest ski area and Mt Hutt

(near Christchurch) are poised to each have their lifts spinning from 7 th June. Nearby ski areas are planning their open days in subsequent weeks.

Mt Hutt and Porters (also in Canterbury) have gone ‘allout’ for families this season with great offers for kids.

Kids free lift tickets are on offer at both Porters and Mt

3

Hutt (with a paying adult and conditions apply) plus around Mt Hutt’s resort town of Methven they’re getting involved by supporting kids free dining, accommodation and transport.

This season The Remarkables, overlooking Queenstown, is boasting its new six-seater Curvey Basin lift this season.

Trail development, new groomers, terrain parks and night lights (at Coronet Peak only) are other developments for the 2014 season.

A winter holiday to New Zealand doesn’t just have to be just about skiing. As you will see in the following pages, the regions surrounding our ski resorts are packed full of activities for all ages, tastes and budgets. In fact last year

80 percent of Australian visitors stayed seven days or longer and commonly skied only five of those days. The rest of their time was spent doing the likes of bungy jumping, jet boating, visiting wineries and taking tours.

Australians make up about 40% of the entire ski market in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Ski Tourism Marketing Network is a group of New Zealand’s leading ski operators throughout

the South Island and regional tourism organisation in resort areas.

I can assist you with information, media contacts in the ski areas and ski destinations, updated imagery, story angles, and assistance should you be aiming to visit New

Zealand’s slopes this winter. We’ve a dedicated media information page on

www.newzealandski.co.nz

so you access the latest releases and media kit 24/7.

I look forward to keeping in touch as the season unfolds.

KEY MESSAGES

More Magic in Every Day:

A winter ski holiday in New Zealand is more than only skiing and boarding a few slopes.

There are more slopes to choose from: beginners can glide across the lower slopes through to super-slick advanced slopes descending from the highest peaks.

There is more variety; not only is there down-hill skiing or boarding but there are terrain parks, a Nordic ski area, dedicated beginner areas, night skiing and much more. There is more to do on the slopes.

A winter ski holiday in New Zealand offers more off the slopes. Ski areas are located near to resort towns where the ‘action’ is. If your legs need a well-earned break then try a day off the slopes sightseeing or having a go at another activity; lake cruising, jet boating, scenic rides, magical walks through wilderness or simply exploring. Indulge your senses with a massage or relax the evenings away around a roaring fire place, complete with a perfect Pinot Noir.

A winter ski holiday in New Zealand is about discovering more magic in every day.

Easy Access: The ski areas of the South Island are easily accessible with direct flights from the East Coast of Australia. There are connecting flights from most other locations) into both Queenstown and

Christchurch airports. A number of ski areas are within 1.5 hrs drive from either of the airports.

5

Long Season: The New Zealand ski season is typically long. The first ski areas to open do so in the first week of June and a number remain open until middle October. Natural show is augmented by snow-making systems at most ski areas. Mother Nature shines on the slopes, with longer sunnier days in the spring months of September and early October.

Variety on Slopes: New Zealand’s diverse geography lends itself to variety on the slopes. The mountains are high, which is great for consistent snow. There is a variety of terrain, long runs and excellent beginner areas. Row after row of snow-laden slopes is a haven for heliskiers.

Variety off Slopes: Typically in New Zealand snow enthusiasts drive to the mountain of their choice each day. By staying in the nearby resort towns visitors can intersperse their ski holiday with loads of other experiences: from wine tours to indulging in a superlative spa!
